התורה קובעת שעמו של הילד נקבע לפי העם של האם. וזה מובן גם ע"פ שכל, שהרי כל שלבי התפתחות העובר נעשים אצל האם, ומובן שהשפעתה על מהותו של הולד היא גדולה באין ערוך משל האב. והנה נאספים אנשים ואפי' נשים ומתעקשים שיחליטו שהולד ילך אחר האב – בניגוד גמור לתורה, לשכל הישר, לטבע ולצדק ויושר. אין "גזל" גדול יותר מלנתק ילד מאמו! כל נשות העולם היו צריכות להתאחד ולצאת במחאה תקיפה לשלול כל נסיון לזה! אנשים אלו מצאו (כביכול) מקור בתורה לכך שהבן הולך אחר האב – הקביעה אם הבן הוא כהן לוי או ישראל תלוי מיהו האב! אבל אין קשר בין הדברים: לקבוע מהותו של הילד, יהודי או לא, הרי אין ספק שהאם היא הקובעת, כנ"ל, אבל כשמדובר אודות התפקיד שאותו ימלא הבן – יש חשיבות גדולה ביותר לחלקו של האב שמצות חינוך מוטלת עליו, ואין חינוך טוב יותר מדוגמא חי' ונסיון אישי, וכשהאב הוא כהן (לדוגמא) וחי ומתנהג כך – הרי הוא מעביר זאת לבניו ובנותיו.

The Torah establishes that whether a child is Jewish or not is determined by the mother. This also makes sense logically, because all stages of the fetus’s development take place within the mother, so her influence on the child’s essence is incomparably greater than that of the father. Yet there are people – even women – gathering and stubbornly insisting that the child should follow the father – in complete contradiction to the Torah, common sense, nature, justice, and fairness. There is no greater theft than severing a child from his mother! All the women in the world ought to unite and protest forcefully against any attempt to do so. These individuals claim to have found source in the Torah for the idea that a child follows the father – namely, the fact that whether a child is a Kohen, Levi, or Yisrael depends on the father – but the two issues can’t be compared: When it comes to determining the child’s essence, meaning whether the child is Jewish or not, the mother is undoubtedly the determining factor, as explained above. But when it comes to the role the child will fulfill, the father's influence is of utmost importance, for the mitzvah of chinuch is primarily his responsibility. And there’s no better education than a living example and personal experience – therefore, when the father is a Kohen, for example, and lives and conducts himself accordingly, he transmits that to his children.
