My mother has the unique merit of making possible the writing and publication of Toras Levi Yitzchok and Likkutei Levi Yitzchok, which are studied to this day in Jewish communities around the world. גם תשובה צ"ל מתוך שמחה. וכמדובר בארוכה בשמחת תורה [ה'תשכ"ט] שאפי' תשובה תתאה, שענינה "עזיבת החטא בלבד", צ"ל מתוך "שמחה של מצוה". וכמ"ש ברמב"ם בענין "שמחה של מצוה", שההתבוננות בתוכן של המצוה ומי ציווה על המצוות – תביא לשמחה גדולה ביותר עד ש"מפזר ומכרכר בכל עוז"! ואם זה כך בכל מצוה, עאכו"כ שזהו כך בנוגע למצוה התשובה. מצד תוכן של המצוה: ברגע א' יכול להשתנות מלהיות רשע גמור להיות צדיק גמור! מצד מצווה המצוה: ממה"מ הקב"ה יורד לאיש שהוא במצב של מורד ר"ל בממה"מ הקב"ה, ואומר לו: אם רק תעשה תשובה – תהי' מרוצה וחביב כמו קודם החטא! וא"כ עאכו"כ שזה צ"ל בשמחה גדולה ביותר! וזה אפי' בתשובה תתאה, דרגא הכי תחתונה בתשובה, ועאכו"כ בנוגע לתשובה עילאה, שבנוגע לתשובה זו נאמר "במקום שבעלי תשובה עומדים אין צדיקים גמורים יכולים לעמוד שם". וע"י התשובה נפעל הסליחה והכפרה "בלי שום ספק וספיק ספיקא" וכו'

Teshuvah, too, must be done with joy. As discussed at length on Simchas Torah [5729], even teshuvah tata’ah (lower-teshuvah) – which is merely “abandoning the sin” etc. – must be done with the joy of a mitzvah. As the Rambam writes regarding the joy of a mitzvah: when one contemplates the meaning of the mitzvah and Who commanded the mitzvos, he feels the greatest joy, to the point of “leaping and dancing with all his might.” If this is true of every mitzvah, how much more so when it comes to the mitzvah of teshuvah: In terms of the meaning of mitzvah, teshuvah transforms a person from a complete rasha to a complete tzaddik. And in terms of Who commanded the mitzvah – the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He Himself, descends to a person who has rebelled against the King, and tells him, if you will only do teshuvah, you will become desired and cherished as you were before the sin. If so, how much more so must teshuvah be done with the greatest joy. This applies even to teshuvah tata’ah, the lowest level of teshuvah, and all the more so to teshuvah ila’ah (higher-teshuvah), of which it says, “In the place where baalei teshuvah stand, even the perfectly righteous cannot stand.” And teshuvah brings about forgiveness and atonement “without any doubt or trace of a doubt” etc.

יום תענית בכלל הוא עת רצון עבור האדם להתבונן ולפשפש במעשיו ולהטיב את דרכו וכו' (במיוחד) בנוגע לאותם הענינים שבעבורם נקבע התענית. ובמיוחד תענית "צום גדלי'" שהוא בימי עשי"ת שעליהם נאמר "דרשו ה' בהמצאו קראוהו בהיותו קרוב"‏ – ‏"עת רצון" ב"עת רצון". הענין שבעבורו נקבע תענית זו הוא שבו "נהרג גדלי'" ע"י "ישמעאל בן נתני'" וכו', שתמורת אהבת ישראל‏ – ‏הי' ענין ההפכי ממש. והיינו, שהענין דהיפך אהבת ישראל היא עצמה הסיבה בגלוי שהביאה לתענית. ובמילא מובן ש"צום גדלי'" הוא זמן מתאים ו"עת רצון" במיוחד לקבלת החלטות טובות בנוגע לאהבת ישראל.

A public fast day in general is an auspicious time for a person to examine his deeds and to improve himself (particularly) with respect to the kind of behavior that led to the events that are commemorated by the fast day. This is particularly true of Tzom Gedaliah, which falls during the days of Aseres Yemei Teshuvah of which it says, “Seek Hashem when He is found, call Him when He is near” – it is an auspicious time within an auspicious time. Tzom Gedaliah was instituted because of the killing of Gedaliah by Yishmael ben Nesanyah etc. – the extreme opposite of Ahavas Yisroel. Thus, it is understood that Tzom Gedaliah is a particularly fitting and auspicious time to make positive resolutions regarding Ahavas Yisroel.
