From a dingy bar in coastal California to a cramped apartment in a brownstone in Brooklyn, to a poverty-stricken village and a monastery in Sri Lanka, Elsie meets men and women who challenge her to varying degrees - they treat her badly, and she treats them badly in return; they are selfless and generous toward her, and she struggles to reciprocate their kindnesses; they are exasperated by her neediness, but she can't figure out how not to need them.

Annoying

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

It's a roller coaster of a read. Super interesting, to so boring. Her self pity is unreal, and its almost painful to see her continually be a fuck about her own life. It's not nearly as extravagant and captivatiung as some lead me to think it would be. She's a pretty average person who is kind of a shithead for a considerable amount of her life.
