The narrator pulls you in. I felt like I was there, having the journey right along side the characters. Falling in love with them.

The detail, the dialogue, the way the story is told. It felt more like a blockbuster movie than listening to a book.

As a young coyote/wolf pup, Coda was taken in to heal from a vicious attack and then released back into the wilds on the outskirts of suburban Pittsburgh. Alone in the wilds, Coda must learn to survive and in doing so is learning not only from the two-legged humans but from other species that eventually join his pack. Feeling a sense of responsibility, Coda’s journey takes him far from Pittsburgh. The humans that are tracking him since releasing him back into the wild discover along with Coda that to survive it takes more than food and shelter. It takes determination and differing levels of self-awareness. One does not merely survive because one can, but rather for a reason – knowing that reason is ever important.

The author, J. S. Michael delivers a creative storyline that will affect the listener with touches of humor, suspense, heartbreak, fear, and anger. Described with words that are vivid in description, the listener is drawn deeper into the story. Michael allows the listener to witness the growth of Coda intimately as he struggles as the alpha male to a misfit of creatures. We were also allowed to witness the growth of the two college students who are also alone growing together around the monitoring of Coda. The character development of the two and four-legged beings in this book was deliberate and slow-paced.

The narrator, J. S. Michael speaks clearly and with the energy and emotion needed to project the mood of each situation and character. He spoke flawlessly and effortlessly. Very well done!

Overall, this is a captivating book that shows the fallacies of one’s nature and highly emotional experiences that drive home the need to be true to oneself and one’s survival.
