Resumen del Editor

Although the Grand Alliance was now in place, Churchill knew that it would take precious time before it would be able to effectively engage and subdue the enemy. Disaster was upon him almost at once. With the entrance of Japan into the global conflict, our Far East possessions were under immediate threat. Singapore and the Philippines fell. In Africa, Rommel took Tobruk. At sea, the loss of ships mounted. His task seemed ever greater, but his spirit, his resolve, his belief in his people's ability to overcome the terrible evil of Nazism was unshakeable.

Headlines were grabbed with the daring commando raid on the St Nazaire dock facilities. In the Pacific, the American forces held and defeated the Japanese in an air duel at the Battle of Midway. Churchill changed his commanders again and installed Montgomery in Africa and the effect was almost immediate: El Alamein. The Afrika Corps were broken. With the invasion by Allied forces of French North Africa the deserts were free of the enemy by May. Now Stalin could be relieved with the opening of a second front in Europe with the invasion of the soft belly of Italy.

In early 1943 the Allies were moving inexorably towards victory. Churchill’s conviction was borne out. The Hinge of Fate was now decided.

The overview is read by Winston S Churchill MP and the volume narrated by Michael Jayston.

Repeat of Volume 3

I did not realize at the time that this volume is a word for word repeat of the second half of The Great Alliance. Don't buy if you've already Volume 3

Excellent history lesson!

This is an excellent recounting of the British side of the war. it does include allies but not as much. Still excellent.

Wonderful and entertaining

I am enjoying so much listening to the mellifluous voices take me through history. I feel like I’m actually all these places with all the characters.

Disappointing

After listening to the first 3 unabridged volumes, this was a complete disappointment. When I purchased it I didn’t realize it was seriously abridged. The content of this volume is contained in the unabridged Vol 3, The Grand Alliance. I found the added music dramatics annoying. The change in narrators is ok and I have no issues with that. I had grown accustomed to Christian Rodska’s narration. You will miss a lot if this abridged version is the only one you listen to. It’s like a very brusque “just the facts” and actually misses the essence of what Churchill wrote. I have purchased a physical set of the 6 volumes so I can peruse them, highlight text and continue to discover the fascinating personal nuggets Churchill revealed. You miss all that in the abridged version. I’m disappointed in this volume and that it seems further volumes are only available in this shortened format. I gave 1 star for the performance because of the music added. The narration by Michael Jayston I would give 4 stars. I gave 1 star overall because I was just so dismayed and dissatisfied with this.
