Pleasant surprise

I totally stumbled upon this book and, despite my great dislike for how-to books and lectures directed at single (black) women, selected it to support my extended village as I recognized the author's name as a fellow alumnus of Oakwood University. I'm glad that I did.
I truly appreciated Carmen's down to earth perspective, and her challenge and encouragement to my demographic---a single, Black American, Christian, midcareer professional woman who still wants marriage. She provided a nice mix of stories, reflections, and stats to make her points more applicable. She did her work! It was not at all what I expected, but timely food for thought for me. I've already recommended it to one of my bffs and my sister.
I've never met the author, but am proud of her work in this book. She is officially a big sister in my head, LOL! Nice work, sis. And THANK YOU. :-)

Some Merit and Some Questionable Advice

Even as someone who is not religious, I can appreciate how Carmen underscores all of assertions with scripture and grounds her book in her spirituality. I think she makes good points about not expecting a man to already be perfect when he comes because you may be closing yourself off to your soul mate. What I don’t appreciate is her prejudicial commentary about single parents which is a constant theme in this book. She uses racially and culturally insensitive names and characterization and makes some careless assumptions as well. I’m not a single parent and even I find it offensive. She does have a good voice for dictation, but some of her inflections are off and that is why I gave it a four on performance.
