Their farewell gifts - hand-drawn cards, a lopsided clay vase, the scarf Iris had outgrown - she tucked carefully into her worn leather satchel. With one last look over her narrow room which had sheltered so many of her hopes and dreams over the years, Alissa hefted her bag to her shoulder and went to meet Olga at the front gates.

The directress waited there next to an open carriage, tears shining in her kind eyes. She held Alissa tightly, stroking her long blonde hair one last time before stepping back.

"Don't be afraid, my girl," she urged. "Embrace this wondrous opportunity before you! I know the future has incredible things in store for you."

Alissa swallowed hard, forcing a brave smile to her face despite the tears pooling in her eyes. Gripping her satchel like a talisman, she climbed into the carriage. As it rattled down the tree-lined road away from the only home she had ever known, Alissa twisted in her seat, watching the stone facade of Starry Orphanage disappear from view. She sank back against the velvet cushions, clutching a worn stuffed rabbit to her chest, its well-loved fur damp with her silent tears.
