Nghi Vo
The cleric Chih finds themself and their companions at the mercy of a band of fierce tigers who ache with hunger. To stay alive until the mammoths can save them, Chih must unwind the intricate, layered story of the tiger and her scholar lover - a woman of courage, intelligence, and beauty - and discover how truth can survive becoming history.
Nghi Vo returns to the empire of Ahn and the Singing Hills Cycle in When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain, a mesmerizing, lush standalone follow-up to The Empress of Salt and Fortune.

I love how layered with stories these little books are, like a good sweet onion, each story a crisp bite hinting at better layers, some which might make you weep for joy or sorrow. Some might be bettered by cooking and added to other dishes, the tigers certainly might agree on the story of Dieu and her tiger wife Ho Thi Thao and how Cleric Chih tells it.
Stuck on a trail with Si-yu and her mammoth Piluk and the man Bao-so that the three tiger sisters (Her Majesty) Ho Sigh Loan, and Ladies Sinh Hoa and Sinh Cam between empty flattery and stories, the tigers listen (and correct) Cleric Chih's telling of their ancestress Ho Thi Thao's history with Dieu.
It is a story that in the telling of it just might save their lives...
(But what is a walking dead curse that Dong Trinth mentions in passing...? I do wish Cleric Chih would be able to unravel all the little stories hinted to us with enough time and patience like perhaps a new Scheherazade of One Thousand and One Nights.)

the story is less interesting than the first one, less dynamic. it's two stories set inside a framing story and while the frame does work, the whole thing is slow paced and the characters less engaging. Almost Brilliant's absence is also a disappointment.
