Through the eyes of three narrators, thirteen-year-old Alejandro Karangalan, his spirited older sister Isabelle, and Domingo, a passionate guerilla commander, we see how ordinary people must learn to live in the midst of extraordinary uncertainty, how they must find hope for survival where none seems to exist. They find this hope in the dramatic history of the Philippine Islands and the passion and bravery of its people. Crowded together in the cellar, the Karangalans and their friends and neighbors tell magical stories to one another based on Filipino myth and legend to fuel their courage, pass the time, and teach important lessons. The group is held spellbound by these stories, which feature a dazzling array of ghosts, witches, supernatural creatures, and courageous Filipinos who changed the course of history with their actions. These profoundly moving stories transport the listeners from the chaos of the war around them and give them new resolve to fight on.

With When the Elephants Dance Holthe has not only written a gripping narrative of how Alejandro, Isabelle, Domingo and their community fight for survival, but a loving tribute to the magical realism that infuses Filipino culture. Performance by the Narrator was absolutely fabulous. She gave powerful life to the characters and story. Beautifully executed.

Highly recommend this audio book, particularly if you and/or your family, ancestors, etc. have been impacted by war, imperialism, occupation, colonialism, etc. What a powerful and important story by Tess Uriza Holthe. Absolutely brilliant.

It’s a great book.

I read this book in 10th grade and I have re-engaged with it now. It’s a great and fascinating story that centers on a family, and their neighbors. I love this book a lot. It makes me want to visit the Philippines and connect with her People. The audio unfortunately skips a little and you miss out on some great part of this story, other than that this is a great story I want everyone to read. I would probably read it my future children…

Abridged version with abrupt edits

I think the performance was very good however the edits were terrible. Important parts of the story were hacked out without any grace.

Beautiful stories

Beautiful stories from my homeland. I did, however, have a hard time understanding some of the Tagalog parts (mispronunciation).

Missing pieces and mispronunciations

This novel is one of my favorite books in the world, and I decided to get the audiobook version so that I could listen to it at my convenience. There are several sections of the story that have been omitted from the audio recording. Additionally, there are some sections, particularly in part three of the novel which are out of order, the story jumps from one part to another, and then goes backwards. It is very frustrating.
