Two best friends grow up - and grow apart - in this innovative contemporary YA novel

Told in dual timelines - half of the chapters moving forward in time and half moving backward - We Used to Be Friends explores the most traumatic breakup of all: that of childhood besties. At the start of their senior year in high school, James (a girl with a boy's name) and Kat are inseparable, but by graduation, they're no longer friends. James prepares to head off to college as she reflects on the dissolution of her friendship with Kat while, in alternating chapters, Kat thinks about being newly in love with her first girlfriend and having a future that feels wide open. Over the course of senior year, Kat wants nothing more than James to continue to be her steady rock, as James worries that everything she believes about love and her future is a lie when her high-school sweetheart parents announce they're getting a divorce. Funny, honest, and full of heart, We Used to Be Friends tells of the pains of growing up and growing apart.

I initially put this book down three times almost every time Cassandra Morris came on as narrator. When I finally, ran out of alternatives, and my strong infatuation with Julia Whelinpulled me.back in. i pciked it up and stuck.with it.., and oh boy! am I glad I did. i'm not sure if it just took Cassandra a while to find the character's voice, or if the writing got better but the characters came so alive, I couldn't stop thinking about them. Cassandra was amazing! She ultimately became my favorie part of the book. while the plot wasn't anything crazy, the characters really stood out and I enjoyed every minute to the end.

Snuck up on me. Glad i stuck with it.

Although I could not stand Kat’s voice she reminded me so much of highschool so it worked. Not sure I liked the end..

Sounds familiar

The performances by the narrators were the best part of this book. The ending is one of those books where you think “really? That’s it?” I had such hope for the book and friends James and Kat but the author didn’t. Guess I should have read the reviews before buying.

The title should have been a clue

Julia Whelan was the only redeeming quality. Don't listen until the end thinking something will happen, because it doesn't!

Don't waste your time

Only okay, it was something to listen to and the narrators were good and easy to listen to

Eh…

The only redeeming quality this book had was Julia Whelan. The narrator for Kat couldn’t have been more annoying. The back and forth on the timelines was confusing and it didn’t even finish the story. Save your time and your sanity and do not listen to this one.

Bad, really really bad!!
