Historia
In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

In May 1971, Pam Jackson and Sherri Miller were two seventeen-year-olds driving to an end-of-the-school-year party in a rundown Studebaker Lark, when they seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth. Police back then didn't do enough to try and find them. Investigators thirty years later did too much. Two families endure decades of pain as they await answers of what happened to their girls. When a third family is pulled into the mystery, they quickly learn their nightmare is just beginning.

One cold November night, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, fifteen-year-old Richard Jahnke Jr., ROTC leader and former Boy Scout, waited for his parents to return from celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the night they met. When his father got out of the car, the boy blasted him through the heart with a twelve-gauge pump-action shotgun. Richard's seventeen-year-old sister, Deborah, was sitting on the living room couch with a high-powered rifle - just in case her brother missed.

But that narrative was called into question one night, when McCaulley answered the phone and learned that his father—whose absence defined his upbringing—died in a car crash.

Pat Conroy's memoirs and autobiographical novels contain a great deal about his life, but there is much he hasn't revealed to readers and listeners - until now. My Exaggerated Life is the product of a special collaboration between this great American author and oral biographer Katherine Clark, who recorded two hundred hours of conversations with Conroy before he passed away in 2016. In the spring and summer of 2014, the two spoke for an hour or more on the phone every day. No subject was off limits, including aspects of his tumultuous life he had never before revealed.

Historia
Fusing the narrative power of an award-winning novelist and the detailed research of an experienced investigator, author Darcy O'Brien unfolds the story of Dr. John Dale Cavaness, the southern Illinois physician and surgeon charged with the murder of his son Sean in December 1984. Outraged by the arrest of the skilled medical practitioner who selflessly attended to their needs, the people of Little Egypt, as the natives call their region, rose to his defense. But during the subsequent trial, a radically different, disquieting portrait of Dr. Cavaness would emerge.

Resumen del Editor
Washed in the Blood is a pause-resisting listen about the time - early 1960s - and place - Odessa, Texas - during its rowdy oil boom days when violence often rode the range. It is at once an examination of local mores and foibles, piety and hypocrisy, and an inside look at the famed "kiss and kill" murder of a 17-year-old would-be actress Betty Jean Williams, whose ghost is said to haunt the Odessa High School campus to this very day. And it is a courtroom saga starring the late trial super-lawyer Warren Burnett, along with a verdict that some think stood the blind Goddess of Justice on her head.
"What Shelton Williams has wrought here is worth both your time and your money." (Larry L. King, author of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas)

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

Engaging and leaves readers thinking
AUDIO BOOK / PRINT COMBO REVIEW. In turns, I read this book with my ears and my eyes (and you don't want to miss the print version because of the numerous photographs author Shelton Williams included). It's a very quick story, coming in at just under 5 hours of listening and 181 pages, but readers will be invested -- particularly if they know West Texas. WASHED IN THE BLOOD vacillates between being a coming-of-age, 1960s memoir, glory-days-of-football story and an exploration of, social commentary about, and reflection upon the murder of the author's cousin, Betty. With a splash of courtroom drama and eye-witness testimony thrown in for good measure.
“No one noticed that I was a completely different person.”
More than anything, this book feels personal. Writing and telling Betty's story is clearly cathartic for the author, but also clear is that closure eludes him, even years after the murder. He sometimes speaks straight to Betty, and we even hear Betty speak (via her letters). Her words are painful to hear, and Williams doesn't shy away from sharing the impact of those words on him and all the questions that linger.
Readers who've read Williams's Covey Jencks series will recognize some of the real-life inspirations for his series, and listeners may recognize the audio book narrator, Kathy L. James, from the Covey Jencks books. In WASHED IN THE BLOOD, James does a wonderful job voicing Betty, but I think I would have preferred a male narrator because this is Williams's personal story. Additionally, James' delivery is somewhat unpolished, with too many mispronounced words, uneven delivery and transitions, and decidedly NOT Texan accent.
If you're getting this book in print, there are two versions available, and I've seen both. I recommend the one with the red cover (published by Zone Press) because the book is better edited and better formatted. (Though many of the black and white photos in the former are a bit clearer.) Overall, this is an engaging book that covers a lot of ground and leaves the reader thinking. I think the book would translate very well to the screen -- and maybe, just maybe that will happen.
