Resumen del Editor

From the Pulitzer and Story Prize winner: 16 new stories - provocative, funny, disturbing, magical - that delve into the secret lives and desires of ordinary people, alongside retellings of myths and legends that highlight the aspirations of the human spirit.

Beloved for the lens of the strange he places on small-town life, Steven Millhauser further reveals in Voices in the Night the darkest parts of our inner selves to brilliant and dazzling effect. Here are stories of wondrously imaginative hyperrealism, stories that pose unsettling what-ifs or that find barely perceivable evils within the safe boundaries of our towns, homes, and even our bodies. Here, too, are stories culled from religion and fables: from Samuel, who in the masterly "A Voice in the Night" hears the voice of God calling him in the night; to a young, pre-enlightenment Buddha; to Rapunzel and her Prince awakened only to everyday disappointment.

Heightened by magic, the divine, and the uncanny, shot through with sly humor, Voices in the Night seamlessly combines the whimsy and surprise of the familiar with intoxicating fantasies that take us beyond our daily lives, all done with the hallmark sleight of hand and astonishing virtuosity of one of our greatest modern storytellers.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"In this macabre smorgasbord of great writing, each story is equally compelling as a straight-through listen or taken in hours at a time." (AudioFile)

Fun and provoking

Steven Millhauser proves to be an exciting and unique new voice in fiction. He writes his short stories with daring vision, developing little worlds out of small towns where the unimaginable happens. 10/10, great listen due to the superb work of the voice actors.

Amazing Stories, Careless Packaging

"Voices in the Night" consists of 17 independent stories, which appear in the chapter listing only as "Chapter 1", "Chapter 2", etc, making it impossible to find a particular story by name!

Best Collection of Short Stories by a Contemporary Writer

Voices in the Night is the best collection of short stories I have read by a contemporary writer. The stories are diverse and the talent is high. Millhauser also shows a humorous side in his story The Home Run or the one about Paul Bunyan’s ne’er do well brother, James. The stories are immensely entertaining. I look forward to listening to more work by Millhauser, a true treasure.

Didn't really care for this book.

I mean....c 'mon; Millhauser is a fine writer. Some of this stuff was beautifully written, like poetry. I would've loved one of my profs in college to have given me this collection. I would've loved reading VOICES IN THE NIGHT for some Lit class.

That is not, however, what I'm looking for from audible. I drive for truly long periods of time for work. I'm looking to be entertained. Aren't books supposed to be entertaining?

Well I was not entertained. In fact, many of these tiresome stories nearly put me asleep behind the wheel.

I didn't really care for this book.

Not Spooky Enough

The stories at first reminded me of 19th century fiction and the genre that I suppose you would call a Tale. But they never reveal a compelling psychological condition or truth, as Poe’s stories did, not do they place the uncanny in a specific and realistic world.
