Historia
As the Revolutionary War begins, 13-year-old Isabel wages her own fight...for freedom. Promised freedom upon the death of their owner, she and her sister, Ruth, in a cruel twist of fate, become the property of a malicious New York City couple, the Locktons, who have no sympathy for the American Revolution and even less for Ruth and Isabel. When Isabel meets Curzon, a slave with ties to the Patriots, he encourages her to spy on her owners, who know details of British plans for invasion.

The powerful forces of group pressure that pervaded many historic movements such as Nazism are recreated in the classroom when history teacher Ben Ross introduces a "new" system to his students. And before long "The Wave", with its rules of "strength through discipline, community, and action," sweeps from the classroom through the entire school. And as most of the students join the movement, Laurie Saunders and David Collins recognize the frightening momentum of "The Wave" and realize they must stop it before it's too late.

Historia
In New York City, in April of 1874, a most unusual event took place. A severely abused nine-year-old girl named Mary Ellen Wilson became the first child in America to be rescued from an abusive home. She had been beaten, burned, slashed with scissors, locked in a closet, and had never been outside of her tenement home in over 7 years. Thanks to the concern and dedication of a missionary named Etta Wheeler, the child was finally saved from her cruel captors.

On March 25, 1911, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City burst into flames. The factory was crowded. The doors were locked to ensure workers stayed inside. One hundred forty-six people - mostly women - perished; it was one of the most lethal workplace fires in American history, until September 11, 2001. But the story of the fire is not the story of one accidental moment in time. It is a story of immigration and hard work to make it in a new country, as Italians and Jews and others traveled to America to find a better life.

Well-written historical story for middle school
Would you listen to Uprising again? Why?
For students who like to have history come alive, this book is worth reading (listening to.) It's a fictionalized account of events leading up to the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911. It also brings to life social issues of the day: workers' rights, factory conditions, immigrants' lives, social class differences, women's rights.
What did you like best about this story?
Told from three perspectives
Which character – as performed by Suzanne Toren – was your favorite?
I enjoyed all three main characters but especially Bella, the Italian immigrant.

A Must Read!
This book was recommended to me by a friend and, as a high school world history teacher, let me just say that this book is fabulous. It is such a beautiful convergence of gender & socioeconomic issues, while also addressing immigration and workers rights problems of the period. The characters are realistic and endearing and the history is accurate and engaging. Definitely worth your time!

A great reminder of the battles fought by women
and labor workers in the early 1900s. I couldn't decide at the end of the book if I hoped the characters were real or fictional. The struggles and passion of those that fought these battles were portrayed beautifully.

Excellent and compelling read!
This is definitely one of those stories that will stay with me for a long time. You know it’s a great historical novel when you learn a lot and then feel driven to keep learning more. Haddix’s characters were so real and believable, and I appreciated her author’s note at the end. Toren’s narration was excellent and brought even more life to the characters. I highly recommend this book!

Historically accurate
This book is wonderfully written. The historical aspects are weaved in so well that the entire thing seems to be nonfiction.
The 3 characters give the various perspectives of the time period. The book brings it all to life and you get to time travel and experience it.
I read an excerpt to my 7th graders and had to find copies of the whole novel because they wanted to read more. I too wanted to read the entire story.
I’m glad I did! Awesome book!
