Poorly researched.

Well written and entertaining, except thstp the author made up nauticsl stuff. At one point "The squadron commander" has all of the men in the crew called to his cabin, all of them, an entire crew of a destroyer in a single cabin! No destroyer has a squadron commander with his own cabin his own menu his own agenda and his own people. Destroyers are smalle ships, I know, I served on 2! State rooms are not "spacious" it would even be a stretch to call the old man's cabin spacious! These discrepancies were so glaring that I had to stop reading the book btw, the are called "cans" because of the way bob on the sea.

Sea story

Great book and tribute to the men of the Plunkett. For me, the book had a local flavor as one of the men was from St. Charles, MO where we live. One inaccuracy, which did not affect the book, the Admiral, a riverboat, was stated as being on the Missouri. In the 1940's the Admiral was on the Mississippi in downtown St. Louis. One other error mentioned was when the Plunkett headed home to the States from Palermo. The book stated they headed east to home. Looking at a map, you head west from Italy. But these inaccuracies do not take away from the story.

Amazing and riveting story, one of the best ever!

This is the best World War II book I ever read, it was amazing, riveting, and deeply personal story of five men aboard the USS Plunkett

To those who gave so much

Wonderful story of selfless men who sacrificed the ultimate for our liberty. So touching and sad that their deeds are not foremost in our collective memory.

I loved it!

The book is interesting and sad at some points, but worth reading or listening. Has some history to the book.

A great but flawed story

The story of the men of USS Plunkett is great, heroic deeds by normal men in abnormal times BUT... the author has made the book too much about himself and his journalistic process. For me this detracts from the story. Add into this the repeated criticism of the British leadership and I found the book losing me - 'Slow Slow Monty', Churchill wanting to take Rome, criticism of the Royal Navy. We can admire the heroism of US servicemen without denigrating the contributions of our allies.

Awesome and unforgettable true story

This audio book, this account, of life and death on a destroyer in World War 2 was awesome, heart-warming, heart-wrenching and unforgettable. The author and narrator were brilliant in telling this true story. All I can say to the ship, its crew, the author and narrator is Bravo Zulu

A touching story of the greatest generation

God bless the men of the USS Plunkett, your memory shall live on forever in the hearts of every American

Excellent book

I listen to a lot of WW2 US naval action books. This one is different inasmuch as it focuses much more on individuals, before and after the war than on naval action. Liked it very much.

A good glimpse in to 'ordinary' sailors

A good glimpse in to 'ordinary' sailors during extraordinary times. I found the audio version incredibly difficult to follow because of the many names and the inconsistent coverage of each sailor. I think there were two Kens and that made things even harder to follow which was which. A good story, there was an excellent chapter towards the end, but apart from that, it felt mundane at times, though I think the author did justice to the story by writing the whole of the story of the Plunkett rather than just the exciting parts. My great uncle also died in WWII so I share that search for the whole story as the author evidently did.
