Resumen del Editor

As an educational researcher, Denise Bressler has spent a lot of time in today’s classrooms, and she is deeply concerned. Students are largely disengaged and unmotivated. How can that be? Learning should be a thrilling adventure, not drudgery.

Drawing on established learning theories and contemporary educational research, Unlearning the Ropes demonstrates that what people are tacitly taught by school is basically backwards. For example, school teaches that good grades matter, yet good grades don’t guarantee learning.

In Unlearning the Ropes, Bressler reveals the moments that changed her beliefs about education. Through relatable anecdotes, she helps listeners reframe the way they think about school, education, and learning. Rethinking what school teaches is the first step toward helping young people become enthusiastic learners.

A must read for teachers and parents

This is one of the best books on learning and school. Lots of anecdotes and perspectives on how learning and schools can be improved. There is also connection to literature and rigorous scientific studies. If you are educator looking to change how you teach and improve your student learning, Denise offer several suggestions.

My favorite chapter is the one on learning from failure. Love also the chapter of gaming. It is definitely worth reading or listening if you are passionate about learning.

Critical listening for parents, teachers, and other educational decision makers

In a very easy to understand but well-supported way, this book advocates for treating kids as developing *learners* who have unique passions, identities, and strengths...not merely as "students" who learn to play the game of school and engage in behaviors that maximize grades and other (often fuzzy) signals of success. The writing is clear and the author contextualizes her points well by giving examples from her experiences as a life-long learner and educational researcher. I highly recommend that parents, teachers, and anyone else involved with making educational decisions listen to this book!
