Acerca de esta escucha
This is the true story of a Harvard graduate who forsook his studies for two years of the grueling life of an ordinary seaman. This exciting tale was the first to realistically describe the lives of the roughly treated, poorly paid sailors of the merchant marine.

Finnegans Wake is the greatest challenge in 20th-century literature. Who is Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker? And what did he get up to in Phoenix Park? And what did Anna Livia Plurabelle have to say about it? In the rich nighttime and the language of dreams, here are history, anecdote, myth, folk tale and, above all, a wondrous sense of humor, colored by a clear sense of humanity. In this exceptional reading by the Irish actor Barry McGovern, with Marcella Riordan, the world of the Wake is more accessible than ever before.

Historia
Richard Henry Dana, a law student turned sailor for health reasons, sailed in 1834 aboard the brig Pilgrim on a voyage from Boston around Cape Horn to California. Drawing from his journals, Two Years Before the Mast gives a vivid and detailed account, shrewdly observed and beautifully described, of a common sailor's wretched treatment at sea, and of a way of life virtually unknown at that time.

Historia
Two Years Before the Mast is a book by the American author Richard Henry Dana, Jr., written after a two-year sea voyage starting in 1834 and published in 1840. While at Harvard College, Dana had an attack of the measles that affected his vision. Thinking it might help his sight, Dana, rather than going on a Grand Tour as most of his fellow classmates traditionally did (and unable to afford it anyway), and being something of a nonconformist, left Harvard to enlist as a common sailor.

Historia
Richard Henry Dana called this book a "a voice from the sea". It had an influence on both Joseph Conrad and Herman Melville, both of whom sang its praises. Dana was a law student at Harvard College who decided, in 1834, to take a break from his studies in order to experience the "real world" by signing on as a common sailor for a two year voyage from Boston around Cape Horn to California. He kept a journal which he turned into a book after the voyage.

Would you consider the audio edition of Two Years Before the Mast to be better than the print version?
Yes, unless the reader is a sailor and knows the pronunciation of the technical terms. The reader was excellent in mastering these unknown terms. What other book might you compare Two Years Before the Mast to and why?
I know of no other. What about Athur Addison’s performance did you like?
His pronunciation appeared accurate, and he dramatized the various characters. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. It needs time to digest and to research the geography of various locations mentioned, especially in the area near the Anartic.Any additional comments?
Should be required reading in all California high schools.Must reading

The beginning of the story isn’t totally engaging as the sailing terminology is very technical, but there’s adventure ahead. Hang in there and you will be rewarded.

Despite that, the story is great! To live through his eyes for two years in Mexican California is so interesting. This book is definitely a must listen for anyone who enjoys hearing about life as it was in the past.
Awkward narrator, great story

Where does Two Years Before the Mast rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This book ranks among my classics near the top of the list. It is not my favorite but I really enjoyed it. I especially liked that this is an actual account of what it was like to be a deck hand so long ago. It truly is a slice of history preserved in time. What was one of the most memorable moments of Two Years Before the Mast?
The navigation among the "ice islands" was very memorable. One could almost feel the cold and see the icebergs. What about Athur Addison’s performance did you like?
I thought he did a fine job. He really brought the book to life. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, because of the length but otherwise my attention was caught the entire time.Any additional comments?
I am glad this book is available to us and am saddened by all the accounts of other professions that must have been lost to us over the years.Interesting, informative, and real
