The Gripping True Story of A Woman Driven to The Brink
In TOO MUCH, a young woman embarks on a journey of self-discovery and resilience as she navigates the challenges of mental health, addiction, and systemic dysfunction within the demanding field of military medicine.
From the sunny shores of Honolulu to the sterile halls of military hospitals, Cindy Lee Neighbors' life takes an unexpected turn as she grapples with the complexities of trauma, addiction, and a system that seems designed to break her.
This gripping memoir is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, a raw and honest exploration of one woman's fight to reclaim her sanity, her voice, and her future.

The author, Cindy Lee Neighbors, shares her experiences and inner struggles in a down-to-earth, deeply personal style. Her writing is clear and accessible, enriched with vivid imagery that brings each scene to life, while her dialogue feels authentic and natural. She vividly conveys her thoughts and actions during intense mental health episodes, offering a poignant perspective that allows the listener to connect with her deeply while also feeling the exhaustion and emotional drain she describes.
The narrator, Rachael Doolen delivers an exceptional performance, effortlessly inhabiting each character and using tone and energy to convey inner turmoil, moments of reflection, and self-doubt with vivid clarity. Her clear, steady voice and measured cadence perfectly match the story’s varying moods, bringing depth and authenticity to every scene. She enhances the listener’s experience, making the narrative both engaging and emotionally resonant.
The title Too Much is fitting—this book is an unflinching account of an emotional journey marked by mental health struggles and drug-fueled delusions, at times overwhelming to take in without feeling drained. Yet, it is also deeply insightful and poignant, offering moments that linger long after listening. It’s a work that demands reflection and powerfully underscores the reality of a broken system.

As the author relates her story, we hear the struggles of colleagues and friends to accept and understand her, often judging and rejecting her instead. But more importantly, we hear her inner struggles to manage her Bipolar Disorder, the mood swings, addiction, the interpersonal conflicts, the isolation and loneliness that people with this disorder experience.
Dr. Neighbors' courage, in putting this out there, called to my mind Dr. Kay Jamison's disclosure of her Bipolar diagnosis in AN UNQUIET MIND. Books like this remind us that the afflicted person feels their own "too muchness" ALL of the time, having to work twenty times harder than the rest of us just to manage ordinary life, much less to belong and succeed in the world.
This memoir so honestly reveals the intense psychological, social, and emotional pain of this disorder on every page, so Dr. Neighbor's choice of narrator was perfect. Rachel Doolen respectfully navigates crisis after crisis with a smooth voice that softens the edges of the "too much", inviting the listener to understand the author from the inside, and to hold on until the end. I'm glad I did.
