This book isn't just another read; it's a journey through mind-blowing scientific discoveries and philosophical debates. From religion to reason, it uncovers the truth.

  • Are you experiencing anxiety about the future?

  • Do you often query whether there is a God?

  • Do you often ponder what the meaning of your life actually is?

  • Do you know beyond any doubt, what truly good education and upbringing really are?

Do you relate to any of these questions? If yes, then you really need to read this book.

By engaging with religious writers and dogmatics of the past and our modern times, Greg Oliver explains that making sense of human existence is simply impossible without the powerful Reason of modern Science. Things like goodness, happiness, rationality, truth, love, beauty and life itself, simply cannot be understood as they really are, without the knowledge and the critical way of thinking, which modern sciences offer.

In the best tradition of the history’s most brilliant philosophers, scientists, sceptics and freethinking writers, Greg reveals how we can make actual sense of our existence and find true happiness by rejecting religious faith and dogmas, and instead, accept the Reason of modern Science.

This is a book for truth seekers. It is - for the most part - aimed at people who possess a broad-spectrum knowledge. In essence, it is an intellectually engaging textbook, which offers a novel approach to Scientific Naturalism.

(The second volume of this work is titled: “Competent Democracy & Freedom and Prosperity of Nations”.)

Greg Oliver's "To Know Reality As It Is" boldly attempts to create a new blueprint, encompassing society, religion, and science, with a focus on human potential and a "self-aware" state. This vision is meant to inspire change. However, it seems, at times, a bit too difficult, with it feeling a reach too far to be honest.

An Ambitious Vision, but a Reach Too Far?

Greg Oliver's "To Know Reality As It Is" is a thought-provoking exploration into humanity's nature and its reliance on natural laws. It is easy to agree with Oliver’s definition for good, the challenge lies in the book's approach to western concepts, while opposing the idea for it.

I found the book thought-provoking and necessary. It does, however, prompt essential questions about humanity. I wondered about the complex interplay between inborn human nature and cultural influences, and whether the book adequately addresses how social and cultural factors shape behaviors and beliefs. If there's a reliance on nature, where do we place free will? More considerations will be needed to fully understand it. Despite any concerns, the effort to explore these questions is laudable. So 5 stars all the way, and good editing is worth applauding too.

Questions of Nature and Influence

"To Know Reality As It Is," is a fascinating, albeit heady mix of ideas on science, knowledge, and the human spirit. I found the core of the book on the ability of an individual to create action. But it also brought forth the concern on if the individual efforts are not supported, would it all just be for naught?

This led me to question where Oliver has been thinking, what will become of us if everything is just in our heads. If reality is just in our heads, does that make our quest pointless? And what does any of this even mean to our modern, day-to-day existence? It's a whirlwind to consider, for sure!

Finding Meaning in a Simulated World

Greg Oliver's "To Know Reality As It Is" passionately critiques modern society, pinpointing issues from consumerism to political polarization. I definitely found myself agreeing with much of what was put to paper. The grand concept is the importance of a "Secular Cultural Revival," but is it truly achievable, or even desirable. What implications does that hold?

The best part of this book is the unwavering attacks on dogmatism. But I was also weary to see a clear love for science and rationality become its own kind of "faith," with proofs rooted in a hypothetical future of scientific understanding. However, this does beg the question, should this secular culture revival have it forced on others, or is that a road for dogmatism as well? What is it about the message that's truly valid? Ultimately, the number of questions this book raises is why it's worthy of 5-star recommendation.

A Revival's Road Map?

Greg Oliver's "To Know Reality As It Is" is an ambitious philosophical survey that courageously tackles fundamental questions about existence, human spirituality, and ethics. The author attempts to synthesize scientific naturalism with broad historical and philosophical knowledge, offering a uniquely scientific perspective on life's deepest mysteries. While the reviewer appreciated the sheer audacity and the refreshingly different viewpoint in modern philosophy, a central tension emerged: the book's pursuit of a definitive, objective reality often clashes with the subjective nature of perception.

Despite its grand scope, the book's dense and overly academic writing style sometimes made it challenging to stay engaged, feeling more like decoding than digesting. The reviewer noted that the book seemed hesitant to fully explore the material importance of emotions or the meaning of organic joy within existence, often dismissing non-scientific evidence in favor of a prevailing scientific view. This approach led to a perceived lack of balance, with the reviewer suggesting a more inclusive perspective where various philosophical ideas could coexist, enriching the discussion and making the book more accessible.

Exploring Reality's Depths

Greg Oliver's "To Know Reality As It Is" ambitiously tackles the complexities of society, religion, and science through the lens of scientific naturalism. The book's willingness to explore taboo topics is commendable, but in attempting to cover so much, it can sometimes rely on broad generalizations. To have a more fully understood perspective, there are questions regarding some details.

I appreciated the discussion on sensitive topics, even if imperfect. But I disliked that the author sometimes appeared to draw back on hard concepts to not offend any side of a discussion. What about more controversial subjects?
