Faith. Trust. Triumph.

"I trust Roselle with my life, every day. She trusts me to direct her. And today is no different, except the stakes are higher." - Michael Hingson

First came the boom - the loud, deep, unapologetic bellow that seemed to erupt from the very core of the Earth. Eerily, the majestic high-rise slowly leaned to the south. On the 78th floor of the World Trade Center's north tower, no alarms sounded, and no one had information about what had happened at 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2001 - what should have been a normal workday for thousands of people. All that was known to the people inside was what they could see out the windows: smoke and fire and millions of pieces of burning paper and other debris falling through the air.

Blind since birth, Michael couldn't see a thing, but he could hear the sounds of shattering glass, falling debris, and terrified people flooding around him and his guide dog, Roselle. However, Roselle sat calmly beside him. In that moment, Michael chose to trust Roselle's judgment and not to panic. They are a team.

Thunder Dog allows you entry into the isolated, fume-filled chamber of stairwell B to experience survival through the eyes of a blind man and his beloved guide dog. Live each moment from the second a Boeing 767 hits the north tower, to the harrowing stairwell escape, to dodging death a second time as both towers fold into the earth.

It's the 9/11 story that will forever change your spirit and your perspective. Thunder Dog illuminates Hingson's lifelong determination to achieve parity in a sighted world, and how the rare trust between a man and his guide dog can inspire an unshakable faith in each one of us.

Michael Hingson is such an Inspiration to us all. I now have a much better Insight into what the World to a Blind person is like. His Accomplishments are truly Incredible! Roselle is such a Loyal and Dedicated Guide Dog. She and Michael’s lives are Intertwined and they share an Unbreakable Bond of Love and Loyalty to each other. Thank you to all of the Blind Dog Organizations out there that work Tirelessly to Train these Animals to make such a Difference in the Lives of those who have some form of Disability and simply need a Companion to help them Navigate the everyday tasks that most of us take for granted. Thank you Michael for sharing not only your Life but the Life of such a Special Dog as Roselle!

Highly enlightening. Inspiring. Riveting story. Casts much truth on misconceptions sighted people have regarding blind people. A MUST read!!

The story behind this book is absolutely incredible and had me hook, line, and sinker as both a disabled person (I'm autistic) and an animal lover. Guide Dogs for the Blind is actually right down the street from where my dad works, so I'm very familiar with the organization. That being said, some parts of the audiobook were poorly written or confusing (such as all of the speeches and interviews tagged on to the end of the audiobook, or the alternation between Michael and his wife's account of 9/11). In addition, Michael is very adamant about some of his beliefs (e.g. that blindness is only a disability because of society, religious beliefs) and I think a lot of the book is heavily biased by his personal beliefs. He also came across as somewhat arrogant, as he likes to boast about the accomplishments that he has achieved in spite of his blindness and his intellectual acumen, in addition to sometimes disparaging sighted people. I understand that he is a gifted man with an amazing survival story, but it came across as somewhat narcissistic. Overall this was an awesome story but how it was communicated could have been better.

Amazing story, some issues with the writing

My spouse & I both listened to intro & were irritated by narrator telling us we will b spellbound, most amazing book, will stay up w page turner. Both thought… WE will decide.

So, good story, altho best info was about development of all tha physical assistance for the blind. Book is almost 10 yrs old, so even more, better physical assistance is available.

Good book, irritating intro.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Roselle is an amazing guide dog, but the story isn't just about her. I've gained a new appreciation for the blind and the challenges of their lives... not so much disability as nuisance. Very good book.

Thunder Dog is a must read!

I could not stop listening to Michael’s story, it was so emotionally positive and heart warming! I am a lover of yellow labs, having 4during the last 30 or so years and currently best friends with Charlie Girl, I think of Roselle and I would have to dry my eyes from tearing up. Micheal you are an inspiration and you taught me so much about blindness, thank you! Stay well!

You won’t want to pause this book! It is a great “eye opener” into the world of those who are blind. Very well written from Micheal’s perspective, and his bond with his guide dog. Glad I chose to purchase this book!
