Resumen del Editor

When Orna meets Gil on an online dating site, their lackluster affair seems like nothing more than a way to stave off the pain of her recent divorce. But soon it becomes clear that Gil may not be exactly who he claims to be and that Orna’s own lies may be weaving an unexpected trap for her.

Set against the turbulent backdrop of the gritty Holon neighborhood in Tel Aviv, this enigmatic and intelligent novel is, in fact, an intricate puzzle. Mishani’s first stand-alone book explores Israel’s forgotten margins, unearthing complicated layers, conflicts, and prejudices. At turns shocking, deceptive, and subversive, Three is a slow-burning psychological thriller from one of Israel’s most beloved writers.

An extraordinary thriller by an author I discovered just now

D. A. Mishani is not a new author. On the contrary; he has written several thrillers. However, it was a pleasure to read « Three ». The setting is different from any other mystery I have read so far. The story is based in Tel-Aviv and shortly in Bucharest.
I took me a little time to get interested, but then I was captivated. Three refers to the stories of three women somewhat connected. Two of them die from an apparent suicide. The third one escapes. All three women are strong in many ways, struggle to survive and are devoted to a cause. The three of them meet Gil, a lawyer and businessman.
The plot is well constructed and believable.
Each part is written in a different style and point of view. Orna is caring mother who deals with a divorce and wants to protect her son from the inconsistent father who left her.Emilia is a foreign worker who cares for elderly patients and worries about her work permit. Ala is altogether different but as compelling as the other two women. The change of tense in the third part is striking and signals that the story is changing direction. I loved this structural concept.
I also learned quite a bit about Tel-Aviv and the ties between certain Jews and Eastern Europe, which of course might have been the birthplace of their ancestors before the war.
Overall I recommend this book highly

Summary vs. Novel

The summary did it's job and grabbed my attention. The novel did not keep it.

I need some more 'why' with my 'who'

I'm a big fan of travel and a big fan of reading mysteries that take place in far away places. Now that arm chair travel is our only option I seem to be devouring these kinds of stories at an even faster clip. Having never been to Tel Aviv, I was excited to delve into this.

It was a slow start but then things are like "what's going on?" at the end of part one (of three, hence the title) and I was hooked. But my favorite mysteries/thrillers have a "why" as well as a "who" at the end of the story. That doesn't happen here and I was bummed.
