This collection of William L. Shirer’s radio broadcasts tells the vivid story of WWII and brings the suspense of the times to life for today’s audience.

As the first journalist hired by CBS to cover the war in Europe, Shirer compiled two and a half years’ worth of wartime broadcasts including Hitler’s invasion of Austria, the armistice between France and Nazi forces in June of 1940, daily roundups of news from Paris, Vienna, Berlin, London and Rome, documenting the conditions of these countries under invasion.

Listeners in the United States and worldwide listened with growing horror as Shirer brought a sense of gripping urgency to the events happening in Europe as Germany took those menacing steps towards WWII.

Shirer was also the author of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.

Unremitting

I like Shirer and some f the stories were interesting, poignant, and historically interesting. They got a bit repetitive and I shared Shirer’s frustration with having to subject himself to extreme censorship. I wanted to keep reminding him that it’s all propaganda and lies, but of course he knew that.

classic timeless always important

this is a wonderful companion to Berlin diary and while for a period after world war II for some reason the lessons of world war 2 were considered no longer important to study. but Shirer`s writing maybe among the most enduring for all future time thousands or millions of years in the future

it ended to soon but I hate the fifteeen word minnie for the description but I did it anyway, Grover Gardner is a amazing reader

the amazing way Shierer shows how hitlers media machine could turn rational sane people into believers.

I love his writing. Eventhough there is repetition in his broadcasts, hearing the uncut transcripts gives the work authentcity and realism.

A Great Time Capsule!

Been a fan the author's other works, so I have looking forward to finally "hearing" his radio dispatches from Berlin.

My 2 highlights of this book were: Seeing people's reaction to this new style of war in real time.. and followed closely in 2nd was, which things the German censors cut from the script and which things Bill was able to slip by... Either through Americanisms, sarcasm, etc.

Well worth the money!

Another banger from Willy and Grover

I could listen to Grover read Williams work all day . This is a very cool collection of Mr . Shirers WW2 broadcasts from before the war up through the Battle of Britain. While I would have liked a lil more context with each “chapter “ (each chapter is a broadcast read by Gardner ) it still is very well done . I’d LOVE to see more of these news broadcasts (brought to you by chesterfield cigarettes of course ) collected and put on audible . I love this time of our history and the ultimate battle to defeat evil . It’s important we produce works worth of it !

This book is amazing

I have longed searched for live recordings of Shirer and Edward R Murill but other than a few scratchy recordings on YouTube, I have completely struck out. Imagine my surprise to find this book. Of course, this isn’t the original recordings, but it is the original text. Grover Gardner is my favorite narrator. This was just like being there as Shirer describes the first year and a half of the war from the Nazi capital. William L. Shirer lived an incredible life and I am so glad he shared so much of it with us.

Interesting approach to history

Very interesting listening to another WWII history, this time from the perspective of the people from that time hearing the story unfolding on their daily news broadcasts. Narrator made it feel like listening to the broadcasts.

Fascinating

This is a fascinating book. The propaganda machine in complete control of the news as presented to the German people. Because we know what was really happening in Nazi Germany, it’s all the more fascinating to hear how it was spun to the people.

And of course as always, Grover Gardner is excellent.
