In October 1941, Hitler launched Operation Typhoon—the German drive to capture Moscow and knock the Soviet Union out of the war. As the last chance to escape the dire implications of a winter campaign, Hitler directed seventy-five German divisions, almost two million men and three of Germany's four panzer groups into the offensive, resulting in huge victories at Viaz'ma and Briansk—among the biggest battles of the Second World War.

David Stahel's groundbreaking new account of Operation Typhoon captures the perspectives of both the German high command and individual soldiers, revealing that despite success on the battlefield the wider German war effort was in far greater trouble than is often acknowledged. Germany's hopes of final victory depended on the success of the October offensive, but the autumn conditions and the stubborn resistance of the Red Army ensured that the capture of Moscow was anything but certain.

So little is written on this period and portion of World War II. This is a very well researched and very well told history of operation Typhoon. The war on the eastern front was a testament to so many things in the human existence. The extreme number of casualties is only part of the story which is layered with many tragedies and atrocities committed on both sides. The Russian's willingness to go to the bitter end for their country may be unparalleled in history. The civilian losses among those who had so little to begin with it terribly sad and well-acknowledged here. The sheer brutality and ruthlessness on both sides of the fence is hard to imagine by the rest of us in humankind.

Learned a lot. The detail is more than I have seen before. Gives you a much better perspective ON Why THE GERMANS FAILED & that the lack of supplies should have been obvious from the start.

Detail Not Seen Before on the German Defeat in Russia

This audiobook does an amazing job of telling the story of the ending of the German drive into central Russia! It provides deep details about the strategic blunders on both sides, while not losing sight of the human beings in the trenches and in the countryside.

Amazing read on the beginning of the turning of the tide

Once again I am surprised by the author clear and detailed account of events, as well as it's attention to every detail of micro and macro around the war in the East

Another Great Raed

A brilliant destruction of post-war Wehrmacht apologia that I grew up with and internalized.

A powerful indictment of the Nazis and their idiocy in this enormous conflict.
