The Yellow Wallpaper was first published in January 1892. It is regarded as an important early work of American feminist literature, illustrating attitudes in the 19th century toward women's physical and mental health. The story is a collection of diary entries written by Jane whose physician husband has confined her to the upstairs bedroom of a house he has rented for the summer. She is forbidden from working and has to hide her journal from him so she can recuperate from a "temporary nervous depression - a slight hysterical tendency", a diagnosis common to women of that period. The story explores the effect of Jane’s medical treatment on her mental health. The Yellow Wallpaper has been interpreted as a condemnation of the paternalism of the 19th-century medical profession. Gilman's works challenged the construct of women in patriarchal medical rhetoric, which portrayed women as passive, silent, powerless persons who refused treatment. Often women were prescribed bed rest as a form of treatment intended to rid them of their rebelliousness and force them to follow appropriate social roles. In her works, Gilman highlighted the harm caused to women by these types of treatments.

Totally Engaging! Couldn't stop listening.

I've read this story before and thought it was just OK but when I listened to Dawn Harvey narrate, I thought it it was fabulous!!
She drew me into the story completely! I believed she was the one with the severe mental meltdown! Awesome job!!

A short thriller!

Would you listen to The Yellow Wallpaper again? Why?

Yes, it was short & simple enough to read again. The narrator did a great job with the scratchy voice!

What did you like best about this story?

I did enjoy the way the woman felt the wallpaper was alive & had a life of it's own - evil as it is...

Have you listened to any of Dawn Harvey’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my 1st read that I know of by this narrator, She did a good job on the voices. The scratchiness in the voice helped make the story more scary.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes! The ending... John fainted? (in her mind anyways)

Any additional comments?

Even though it is a short story, the storyline was well delivered. Would make a great Halloween story!

Fantastic

I love the Yellow Wallpaper, I've read it numerous times during high school and college. This is my first time listening to it, Dawn Harvey did an amazing job narrating. I would recommend it to anyone, especially women.
