Resumen del Editor

The universal appeal of Laura Ingalls Wilder springs from a life lived in partnership with the land, on farms she and her family settled across the Northeast and Midwest. In this revealing exploration of Wilder's deep connection with the natural world, Marta McDowell follows the wagon trail of the beloved Little House series. You'll learn details about Wilder's life and inspirations, pinpoint the Ingalls and Wilder homestead claims on authentic archival maps, and learn to grow the plants and vegetables featured in the series. Excerpts from Wilder's books, letters, and diaries bring to light her profound appreciation for the landscapes at the heart of her world.

Unexpected enjoyment

I did not expect to enjoy this book so much! I am a huge LHOTP fan but found this book so interesting because of the unique viewpoint. What a great idea to explore the life of Laura through the horticulture that surrounded her!

wonderful

and the narrator was so good. The last chapter is a hidden treasure, a road trip of Laura Ingalls Wilder's life that feels hard to resist. Gardening, wildflowers, fields, forests, rocks, streams fill the pages. They filled my heart, even today after almost 50 years of mainly vegetable gardening that expanded to pollinators.

Annoyed by personal stories from the author

The author's decision to interject her own childhood memories amongst the information is jarring, and uninteresting. The topic of the book is quite clear, and I found myself annoyed by personal stories from the author about a childhood unrelated to the subject specifically and I have no interest in hearing about. The context shared about Ingalls-Wilder is mostly derived verbatim from Pioneer Girl with few, but limited additions. The horticultural information, and the early historical information is interesting and the book is quite dense with it. Generally I would listen/read an informational book 2-4 times in rapid succession to digest all the information, but this book, with its personal experience interruptions and limited new context to the Ingalls-Wilder story does not garner such a desire to re-read.
