Another brilliant novel from Ms. Winspear. The white lady is a great character and the story is full of intrigue, action and heart.

Such a fine author is Jacqueline Winspear. I have read all of her books. Maisie Dobbs is my favorite. Hearing this novel read by Orlagh Cassidy makes it extra special.

Another Win for Ms. Winspear

I could have imagined Maisie Dobbs in Elinor's place, the moral struggles were similar. I felt the story was tight, always moving. I have read all of Ms. Winspear's novels and would be interested in continuing with this character if she chose to make her into a series. I always enjoy Ms. Cassidy's narration, she & Ms. Winspear just go together.

Unexpected Gem

Historical nonfiction at its best by a very good author and read by one of my favorite narrators. Accents always spot on. Locations and details well researched by author.

Wonderful

I took a chance on this when it was one sale and WOW! I loved it. The plot and pacing are excellent, but the character-work truly sparkles. The struggles of the protagonist (and side characters) particularly in regards to post-war struggles, PTSD, etc. , felt realistic and deeply human.

If you’re a fan of well-plotted, character-driven historical fiction, you’ll likely enjoy this.

If you enjoyed Maisie Dobbs, you will enjoy this book. Another interesting character to discover.

Unmissable!

Loved the story, narration, and the pace. Brought to life the reality of war, spies, and the bravery of ordinary people in a way that is nuanced, human and real. Narration is fabulous. And the language is exquisite.
