Reseñas editoriales

"This book is insightful, helpful, and hopeful - just like the woman who wrote it! It is a 'how-to' guide that I am confident will leave any reader feeling both informed and inspired." (Emily Gerson Saines, Executive Producer of the HBO movie Temple Grandin)

Resumen del Editor

As many as 1.5 million children and adults in the U.S. have autism. The lifetime cost of caring for a child with autism ranges from $3.5 to $5 million. Our children - our future - are at stake. The world needs to listen to what Temple Grandin has to say.

In this innovative audiobook, Dr. Temple Grandin gets down to the REAL issues of autism, the ones parents, teachers, and individuals on the spectrum face every day. Temple offers helpful do's and don'ts, practical strategies, and try-it-now tips, all based on her "insider" perspective and a great deal of research. These are just some of the specific topics Temple delves into:

  • How and Why People with Autism Think Differently
  • Economical Early Intervention Programs that Work
  • How Sensory Sensitivities Affect Learning
  • Behaviors Caused by a Disability vs. Just Bad Behaviors
  • Teaching People with Autism to Live in an Unpredictable World
  • Alternative Medicine vs. Conventional Medicine
  • Employment Ideas for Adults with Autism

This revised and expanded edition contains revisions based on the most current autism research, as well as 14 additional articles including "The Role of Genetics and Environmental Factors in Causing Autism", "Understanding the Mind of a Nonverbal Person with Autism", "Finding Mentors and Appropriate Colleges", and many more!

Makes me Wonder!

Amazing book that makes me wonder just how many autistic children have been brushed aside by the "medical" profession, and the school system. Temple was so lucky to have an educated mother that would not give up on her. No two people are alike, much less two autistic children. Each have a special talent, and it takes love, patience, and understanding to bring out that talent.

another fine animal psychology book

temple grandin has produced another fine animal psychology book. this time focusing on the most dangerous animal of all, the autistic man.

just as hans asperger had reasoned to the nazis to spare autistics from euthanization due to their potential value to the reich, or just as the predators in the latest predators movie knew (the predators who as it turns out, are not trophy hunters but in fact simply weirdos who maraud the galaxy hunting the spinal fluid of autistic ppl to use in their genetic engineering); autistics have the potential to be either the meekest of prey or the most cunning of predators, intellectually disabled or a genius savant, a mute or a poet, the ginger haired president of the united states or a school shooter...

Insightful

Very insightful information. Love it. The downside for me was that several times exact same stories were repeated throughout the book.

An informative look at autism

If you could sum up The Way I See It in three words, what would they be?

informative
interesting
knowledgable

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Way I See It?

The whole book was pretty memorable really.

What three words best describe Laural Merlington’s voice?

Sounds strangely like Betty White
Slightly robotic - sometimes it was hard to know whether it was a human or a computer program reading which distracted from the text somewhat; she's not always a smooth reader

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The book is more informative than moving

Any additional comments?

I originally thought I'd skip chapters not so relevant to my situation, but I ended up listening to the whole book, enthralled. A lot of a-ha moments and much information that I can use.

Jon

Any additional comments?

The over-the-top introduction / forword in this book almost made me stop listening. Temple is a great person, but her works and personality can stand on its own without the glorification going on in the introduction part. The whole intro reeks over gratification toward Temple, Namedropping and recounting of how good a friend she is to temple, and untasteful descriptions of people that where not able to help her with her son (like when she sarcastically referred to the psychiatrist that was in the middle of a nervous breakdown). The text by temple was itself good, but the forward / introduction part almost made me stop the audio. But just so it’s clear – Temple, I love you!
