In The Vanquished, a highly original and gripping work of history, Robert Gerwarth asks us to think again about the true legacy of the First World War. In large part it was not the fighting on the Western Front that proved so ruinous to Europe's future but the devastating aftermath, as countries on both sides of the original conflict were savaged by revolutions, pogroms, mass expulsions, and further major military clashes. If the war itself had in most places been a struggle mainly between state-backed soldiers, these new conflicts were predominantly perpetrated by civilians and paramilitaries and driven by a murderous sense of injustice projected onto enemies real and imaginary. In the years immediately after the armistice, millions would die across central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe before the Soviet Union and a series of rickety and exhausted small new states would come into being. It was here, in the ruins of Europe, that extreme ideologies such as fascism would take shape.

As absorbing in its drama as it is unsettling in its analysis, The Vanquished is destined to transform our understanding of not just the First World War but the 20th century as a whole.

Gerwarth's book goes beyond the mere acknowledgment of the creation of nation-states and the demise of empires. Gerwarth points that the empires managed to create societies in which several different ethnicities could live, relatively peacefully, with one another while the resulting nation-states were tied together either by religion or the ethnic culture - and often intolerant. Gerwarth states that most of the nation-states, by narrowly defining their cultures, almost by necessity end up excluding and/or persecuting the state's minorities. Or in nations like Czechoslovakia (Czech versus Slovak) or Yugoslavia (Croatians versus Serbs), the new nation is set up for conflict some time down the road.
That is only part of Gerwarth's story, and I confess that I would be even more pleased with the book if it were double its length. But this book does expand the post WW I discussion from simply being an introduction to how Germany and the USSR ended up in WW II. Gerwarth describes the years 1918 - 1923 not as setup for Hitler, but he brings out the seminal problems that the Germans faced in these years, Hitler or no Hitler. This book may be confusing to some as Gerwarth moves from country to country, but the way that he does that links all the countries into a whole which helps to explain the period. And he does write about each country in its own right. This was good enough for me that I wanted more. And I don't say that often.
And I can't imagine a better narrator than Michael Page. But as with many Audible non-fiction books, I miss the maps, photos, and footnotes. This time, I did track a hard copy down and that helped my comprehension.

It kept my attention throughout and I learned a lot about a time that influenced my parents' generation and a time whose influence, it appears, is still being felt to this day.

informative and compelling read

It was hard content to listen too, why are some humans so cruel, it was performed well.

Great overview of the post-WWI scene in Europe. Wonderfully narrated. Only complaint is that it was too short (though to do justice to the period and regions, it would have to be three times as long, which then might make it a bit of a slog to listen). A great weekend listening if you are into WWI though. Perfect for that weird uncle.

Great overview

While those with a strong background in the Russian Revolution and the origins of Weimar Germany may be familiar with some of what the book covers, even those with broad knowledge of European history are likely to find something new to them here. The main focus is the pivotal period of 1917-1923, when remarkable numbers of new countries were formed, borders established, and often a surprising number of casualties were inflicted in little known conflicts. In addition to filling in the blanks of historical knowledge for many of us (from Finland to Turkey, from Romania to Greece), this work also points us toward the common impact of the Great War on (especially eastern) Europe's history and government. Though you will want to learn more about these countries, this is an excellent start.

An interesting, of not un-biased, account of the unrest, suffering, and pain of inter-war Europe.

I found this book really thought provoking . It lays out the case that world war 1 never really ended and just paused before war broke out once again. The world is still dealing the the effects of this conflict

Very interesting

It was a very informative book about how politically fractured, especially, white Europe was and caused the countries they've touched since WWI to be. It gave great detail to how Russia, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire fought and failed to retain their borders or increase their borders and peoples. But I do not understand why the author refused to write the word Istanbul, though he referred to other cities by their several names.. curious. Kept calling it Constantinople... but it hasn't been that since the 15th century ?!

Vanquished - will there ever be unity?
