Thirteen-year-old Maureen Kiernan can’t understand the scary feeling that something dreadful is about to happen. After all, she likes her life. She loves living in New York, is first chair in the cello section of the school orchestra, and is accepted into the Pre-College Division of The Juilliard School. So why is she feeling so distraught? For one thing, the happy atmosphere in her house changed almost overnight. Her parents are withdrawn and secretive, acting as if she’s not old enough to handle the truth. Her overactive imagination goes into high gear, believing that one of the reasons is death, debt, or divorce. But the dreadful Ds are nothing compared to what she eventually learns. As her life turns upside down and inside out, she abandons her cello and must cope with a difficult lifestyle change. Will she ever be happy or play the cello again?
