The protagonist of these “memoirs" is Robert Hooker, a sly and unscrupulous bibliophile who cons the wealthy out of their rare books and manuscripts. The plots of the stories involve cleverly constructed forgeries, fake customs officials, and many other fascinating twists and turns.
