Squadron Leader Clarke returns!

In a way, this is the second half of "The Thirteenth Witch," but it's a testament to the author's skill that either book is excellent as a stand alone work. They are each complete stories with satisfying endings. In this book, the story picks up with Conrad Clarke having finished his entrance test as it were, and starting as an official member of the King's Watch. We meet up again with Lord Mayor of Moles, Vicky, the Boss, Mina, and others, as Clarke has to deal with new developments in the world of magik. These are great stories in the written form, but Ciaran Saward's voice really brings them alive.

More please

I am thrilled to find another series of books to enjoy. The narration is on point and the main character is just so enjoyable with his hard outer shell and his inner heart of gold. Please Audible bring us more. I want the whole series as soon as I can afford them.

Another fun read.

Installment #2 is in all, ways an improvement over its predecessor. Less cliched than #1. Much more cleanly written and edited (none of the unprofessional typos and the like common to independently published books seen in the the 13th Witch). The author seems to be settling in and finding a more comfortable voice and relationship with his characters. The series is never going to achieve any measure of profundity, but neither does it aspire to that. It’s an enjoyable urban fantasy with an interesting, well-thought-out and relatively original system of magic. The protagonist may be boilerplate noir and slightly too full of himself, but he has charm, is increasingly surrounded by a likable supporting cast, and even the Ex machinae interventions (literally by one or more gods) are inoffensive, given the active roles played by the gods in the evolving storyline.

These books aren’t going to change your life, but they are quite pleasant light reading and Book #2 continued to build up the unanswered, slowly developing back-story/“conspiracy” that, in aggregate, left me wanting to see how the characters progress in their lives and to see the back-stories with their mysteries reveled in cute installments. Will definitely read more of them when I’m craving a fun and easy read (I.e. NOT because my life will be incomplete without learning all the answers).
