Reseñas editoriales

The emotional heart of the history of British settlement of Australia is exquisitely rendered and thoughtfully performed by James Condon in the classic Australian novel by Eleanor Dark, The Timeless Land. Marred by conflict and brutality, this story brilliantly evokes the people and landscape of Australia as a backdrop for crucial struggles between white settlers and aboriginal people. In equal measure compassionate and critical, and filled with living imagery, Dark never shrinks from her subject. With energy and deep feeling, Condon brings this important classic piece of Australian literature to life.

Resumen del Editor

First published in 1941, Eleanor Dark's classic novel of the early settlement of Australia is a story of hardship, cruelty and danger. Above all it is the story of conflict: between the Aborigines and the white settlers.

In this dramatic novel, introduced here by Humphrey McQueen, a large cast of characters, historical and fictional, black and white, convict and settler, brings alive those bitter years with moments of tenderness and conciliation amid the brutality and hostility.

All the while, behind the veneer of British civilisation, lies the baffling presence of Australia, a timeless land that shares with England "not even its seasons or its stars".

Captures the heart and soul of Australia's past

I read The Timeless Land over 20 years ago and have never forgotten it and always meant to read it again when I found the time, but of course I never did. So when I discovered that it was available as an audiobook I immediately downloaded it and have found all the magic and more all over again.
This is a beautiful book and James Condon is a truly passionate and articulate narrator. The series characterises and delves into the minds of all facets of early convict society, from the lonely Governor Phillip, his men, to the convicts both good and bad; it gives voices, personalities and souls to the many Aboriginal names that have passed into history, especally the tragic hero Bennelong. As well as the convicts, Eleanor Darke has created characters from their children, who found Australia to be their home not their prison. But more than this she gives life to the landscape of the untouched Australia and captures its harshness and beauty.
Best of all, it is a great story full of great characters and emotion. This is is not a text book on Australia's past, but an heroic saga, for those who love Australian history and those who would like to. If I was asked what my favourite book in the world is, I would say The Timeless Land without hesitation and its even better as an audio
