this might be a good story. It's an intriguing concept, but I had to quit only a few chapters in. the bad voice acting completely took me out of the story and made every character unlikable. At times, I felt like I was listening to voices of Nickelodeon cartoon characters

Ruined by Bad Narration

great book! good story! and he managed to get all the 90s feeling perfect.. let's call it nostalgia, but we'd never call it that.

there is a lot in here

The story itself wasn’t jarring, it was the performance. The one character was voiced in a way that totally broke the immersion for me. Otherwise the story itself was okay, kind of like a modern day IT, I dunno, good filler stuff but not the author’s best work.

Jarring!

I loved the story, I liked the characters. I do wonder if Chuck Wendig realizes 1998 was 27 years ago, and the characters would be almost 50, but it was an enjoyable story and more than I expected. I do question some of the choices with who read what section, and especially how some of the antagonists were voiced, but on the whole the narrators did a great job.

Great story, occasionally questionable vocal choices

A story of commitment, danger, fear, love, relationships and every emotion you can ever feel.

A straw man for the most disgusting people in the current social environment. Her political rant was a waste of braincells. Steven King would add a little politics, but this was a Tumblr spurg out.

Lor character is terrible

The title wraps it up. Decent story, but didn’t relate to his paradigm, which. I felt was too forward in the book

Story was good, but could use without his politics

Loved it! I’ve been slightly fascinated with the stories about people finding random staircases in the woods for a few years now. So I had to get this book. And I’m glad I did.

The staircase in the woods, of course

Chuck does such a good job developing his characters. This group of people started off as a bunch of jerks and you just can’t figure out why they were ever friends or why they would honor the “covenant.” But page by page and revelation by revelation, you start to get it. It’s about friendship, time, commitment and forgiveness, all amidst a bunch of scary weird stuff. Good read.

Thoughty, scary good time
