But to grasp the full impact of this agonizing conflict, the human costs of an infernal war that raged for 10 years and took more than 58,000 American lives, one must hear about it from the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who experienced the fighting and endured.
In The Soldiers' Story, veteran journalist Ron Steinman gathers the candid reminiscences of 76 men who survived combat in Vietnam. Not a military analysis or political study, this oral history vividly conveys the hardships, friendships, fears, and personal triumphs of marine, army, air force, and navy veterans - each of whom shares memories that have lingered to this day. It is a valuable frontline record of battle-torn Vietnam from the perspectives of those who lived it firsthand, giving us a window into the horror, intensity, and raw courage that the war engendered.

In November 1965, some 450 men of the First Battalion, Seventh Cavalry, under the command of Lt. Col. Hal Moore, were dropped by helicopter into a small clearing in the Ia Drang Valley. They were immediately surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. Three days later, only two and a half miles away, a sister battalion was chopped to pieces. Together, these actions at the landing zones X-Ray and Albany constituted one of the most savage and significant battles of the Vietnam War. How these men persevered makes a vivid portrait of war at its most inspiring and devastating.

1st Lieutenant Robin Bartlett suddenly found himself at the "repo-depo" in Bien Hoa reassigned to the 1st Cavalry Division. The unit had more helicopter support than any other unit in Vietnam. Immediate support from artillery, helicopter gunships, and ARA was only minutes away to support a firefight. Wounded troops could be medevaced even in dense jungle using "jungle penetrators." It also meant that Bartlett's platoon could deploy through helicopter combat assaults into hot LZs (landing zones) at a moment's notice if an enemy force had been spotted. And they did.

Great firsthand stories.
Loved this book generally,..but good grief would these audio book-producing companies hire people that can correctly pronounce common words!!! Every time he pronounced PLAToon, it was like sticking me with a pin.

True stories
Read this book a year or two ago. I actually tote this book around for whenever I need courage. John McCain gave a perspective which was amazing to me as a teen. I had no idea he was a POW. First few chapters on the battle of IA Drang I wished would never end because they were the most vivid. Later in the book they talk about the futility of hiding from mortars which just cements a larger perspective. If this is a book you like definitely recommend the things they carried.

Riveting First hand accounts
There is nothing like first hand accounts of what happens in combat. These accounts had me on the edge of my seat. The only annoying thing is that the narrator kept calling corpsman… coors-man??
