It's Not What it's Advertised to Be...

If you're interested and click on the title before purchasing, you get an entire list of what's supposed to be contained in the "collection" (i.e., A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis; Psychopathology of Everyday Life; Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex; Totem and Taboo; Leonardo Da Vinci; Dream Psychology; On Aphasia: A Monograph; The Origin and Development of Psychoanalysis; Beyond the Pleasure Principle; etc., etc.) Really? Not even close. Almost all of the entire 38 hours of this collection is a rambling dissertation of "Dream Psychology," and almost nothing else. At best, it was boring. At worst, after listening to this I find it very hard to come to terms with Freud's work--especially as it relates to psychoanalysis (which is only marginally touched on in this collection) essentially being the foundation for most of the psychiatric and psychological treatment approaches for the 20th Century. I'm pretty literate and well-educated (multiple master's degrees and a doctorate in the health sciences), but I came away pretty shocked by Freud's writing. To him, every describable pathology is related to some sort of sexual obsession or tension--largely dating to childhood and our so-called repressed desire to boink one or more of our parents. Whatever we seem to dream can only be described as related to penile or labial imagery (e.g., whether we dream of a hat, a closet, a swimming pool/lake, a snake, a walking stick, or whatever). Cocaine--which he freely admits to having been addicted to to the point of causing a deviated septum (I knew people in the 1970's that that happened to and you wouldn't believe the amount of coke they had to do to cause that to happen)--must have made him so horny it was all he could think of! Don't waste your time with this. You'll be hugely disappointed. Extremely disappointed. God only knows why this guys theories have had the long-standing impact that they have had. It only served to remind me that those of my colleagues in the health sciences go into psychiatry or psychology because they have a whole s*&$ ton of pathology themselves.

Confusing, but glad to have an audio option

Where is the chapter list? This would be really helpful! The narrator does not seem to be familiar with psychoanalysis. He mispronounces oedipus every time and places incorrect emphasis on a number of key analytic terms. Having an audio option for these texts is great.

Narrator is not very engaging

To me the narrator is not very engaging. Narrating feels very monotone, which might be because of the lack of understanding of the content.

Does not contain proper books. Audio errors.

I thought the reader was decent, especially with the french/german sections, but there was an audio problem in recording, it seemed, that made the audio repeat, probably where it should have been edited or cut to correct mistakes, especially in the last book. More importantly...

This collection purported to contain the following texts, A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis; Psychopathology of Everyday Life; Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex; Totem and Taboo; Leonardo Da Vinci; Dream Psychology; On Aphasia: A Monograph; The Origin and Development of Psychoanalysis; Beyond the Pleasure Principle; Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego; Studies on Hysteria; Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious; Delusion and Dream Reflections; On War and Death; The Interpretation of Dreams; On Narcissism: an Introduction; The History of the Psychoanalytic Movement; Dream Psychology (sic, again???); Psychoanalysis for Beginners; Resemblances Between the Psychic Lives of Savages and Neurotics.

The collection actually contained only these texts:

Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego, On the History of the Psychoanalytic Movement, Dream Psychology: Psychoanalysis for Beginners, Beyond the Pleasure Principle, Delusion and Dream in Wilhelm Jensen's Gradiva, and The Interpretation of Dreams.

The collection was therefore missing these texts,

A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis; Psychopathology of Everyday Life; Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex; Totem and Taboo; Leonardo Da Vinci; On Aphasia: A Monograph; The Origin and Development of Psychoanalysis; Studies on Hysteria; Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious; On War and Death; On Narcissism: an Introduction; Psychoanalysis for Beginners; Resemblances Between the Psychic Lives of Savages and Neurotics.

Intellectually Thought Provoking

Intellectually Thought Provoking , the Sigmund Freud collection is an excellent read. His concepts on dream interpretation and suppressed feelings and emotions are revealing of the instinctive nature of humankind.
