Outstanding history

Speaks to the truth and tragedy of what happens when the Church focuses on the temporal instead of the eternal. The Church experienced so many problems when they emphasized temporal power over spreading the gospel to the ends of the earth.

Complex history broken out into relateable chunks. I have a new appreciation for all that the Catholic Church has gone through these past 2,026 years. To God be the glory!

Concise and thorough overview of Catholic history

Steve does a fabulous job of weaving just the right amount of detail; to paint a beautifully clear picture of how the Church has faithfully fought its way from inception to present day.

More interpretation than history

If you want some good ole propaganda about the Catholic Church, this is for you! Facts are accurate but the spin throughout is palpable. And what he leaves out tells the true story. One example: after decrying how horrible Luther was for taking a wife (there are certainly many things to critique Luther on but this is pretty far down the list) there is not a single mention of the cold molestation crisis in the Catholic Church by many of her priests! And this book was written in 2018! So much for the commitment the author makes to tell the good AND the bad, from his perspective as a devout Catholic. Finally, I will say that if you are interested to know the key issues that brought about the Reformation, he outlines those well by, ironically, defending the exact problems that were present in the Catholic Church and, evidently, persist today (especially an outright rejection of Sola Scriptura and then primacy of the Bishop of Rome).
