Experience the transformational power of the sacred, ancient, radical rhythm of Sabbath rest.

In the fast-paced, chaotic, overly scheduled cadence of our culture, it can be difficult to imagine how to squeeze the Sabbath into our already over-stuffed lives―like trying to fit an eleventh passenger into an eight-passenger van. What if Sabbath isn’t designed to “fit” into our lives, but rather to take over our lives―in the best way imaginable?

Hebrew scholar and Old Testament professor Travis West believes that we’ve misunderstood what it means to truly Sabbath. In his book, The Sabbath Way, Travis takes listeners on a spiritual journey to discovering radical rest is more than a weekly practice of taking a day off―it’s also a posture, a way of living every day. It means much more than sleeping in, taking naps, or chilling poolside for an afternoon; instead, the radical rest of Sabbath means putting rest―and delight, gratitude, and flourishing―first rather than last. Using personal story and expert knowledge, Travis shows Christians how to make Sabbath rest the metronome that establishes and maintains our life’s rhythms, apprenticing us to abundance our whole life long.

Listeners of this audiobook will discover how the Sabbath:

  • slows us down helps us discover the things that make us feel most alive, freeing us from rigidity and legalism
  • disrupts our cultural obsession with productivity and achievement and cultivates a more life-giving connection between our work and our worth
  • inspires an unhurried, sacramental worldview that sees all of life as a gift
  • safeguards neighborliness, creation care, awareness of God’s presence, justice, belonging and inclusiveness―enabling us to grow into the people God is calling us to be in our lives, our homes, our workplaces, our communities, and our world

The Spirit of God longs for you to be fully alive, and the world needs your unique vitality. The Sabbath is calling. Will you come?

There is a lot in this book to challenge a Christian who is a Helper- enneagram type 2. My tendency to always be doing something couple with some ADD tendencies makes true sabbath tricky. This book helped me think about it in a different sense. Sabbath isn’t just another thing to DO. Rather, it’s a way of life. I really connected with the examples of thethe author’s sister- busy house, lots of kids. Finding rest even in this season of life is a goal to strive for. Thank you for some practical guidance and tips on how to get closer to the Sabbath Way.

Enneagram 2’s take note!!

This book spoke right to my heart. Sometimes life can feel like a heavy weight and my Christian faith leads me to want to do everything right for God’s purposes. Travis West shares in the Sabbath God designed his children for play and delight and not simply work and toil. His invitation in the Sabbath Way is to experience the delight God designed us for and to grow in this way.

Relief and Joy

I particularly enjoy listening to books read by the author. This author has a warm and inviting voice and his story of experimenting with and refining his sabbath practice over nearly 20 years is compelling. His observation is that the gift of sabbath is for everyone, and there is freedom to find personal delight in the sabbath because there is no universal way to practice it! There is no one size fits all approach. However he stresses that “sabbath is for anyone who longs to bring their life back down to size, to experience connection, and to live with greater contentment and delight.” I needed this book and believe this book can be life changing for everyone who finds themselves exhausted and struggling to meet all their obligations in the midst of a chaotic world and a stressful life.

Sabbath is a gift for everyone!

This is a beautifully written invitation to the holy practice and posture of Sabbath - something so many of us are longing for in today’s world, but are unsure how to enter. West gives both personal and deeply theological reflections, as well as practical starting points (see additional PDF resources!), to allow everyone to feel they can claim what he calls our “birthright” of rest and delight. In playful and accessible language (well-read by the author himself), West challenges and encourages readers wherever they may be on their own journey toward the healing and wholeness Sabbath graciously offers.

Such a Gift!

The Sabbath Way is a thoughtful and refreshing read that draws you into the gift of sabbath while also honestly naming how our culture actively resists its gifts of rest and delight. West offers the reader wisdom instead of a new list of rules, and does so in a fresh, practical way. The writing is warm, inspiring, and applicable, showing how sabbath can overflow into connection, belonging, and peace. Truly a joy to read, and one I highly recommend!
