A sinister cabal of corrupt law enforcement personnel, intelligence agents, and military officials at the highest levels of government plotted to overthrow a president. Even after they failed, they continue to secretly pull the levers of power without any accountability to the American people. This isn’t the synopsis of a fictional spy thriller. This is what is actually happening in the United States government.

AI will be the defining development of the 21st century. Within two decades, aspects of daily human life will be unrecognizable. AI will generate unprecedented wealth, revolutionize medicine and education through human-machine symbiosis, and create brand-new forms of communication and entertainment. In liberating us from routine work, however, AI will also challenge the organizing principles of our economic and social order.

You may be surprised to learn that microchips are the new oil—the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips. Virtually everything—from missiles to microwaves—runs on chips, including cars, smartphones, the stock market, even the electric grid. Until recently, America designed and built the fastest chips and maintained its lead as the #1 superpower, but America’s edge is in danger of slipping, undermined by players in Taiwan, Korea, and Europe taking over manufacturing.

The runaway success of the microchip processor may be reaching its end. Running up against the physical constraints of smaller and smaller sizes, traditional silicon chips are not likely to prove useful in solving humanity’s greatest challenges, from climate change, to global starvation, to incurable diseases. But the quantum computer, which harnesses the power and complexity of the atomic realm, already promises to be every bit as revolutionary as the transistor and microchip once were.

We live in the age of the algorithm. Increasingly, the decisions that affect our lives—where we go to school, whether we can get a job or a loan, how much we pay for health insurance—are being made not by humans, but by machines. In theory, this should lead to greater fairness: Everyone is judged according to the same rules.

Resumen del Editor
Staying true to his trademark journalistic approach, Andrés Oppenheimer takes his listeners on yet another journey, this time across the globe, in a thought-provoking search to understand what the future holds for today's jobs in the foreseeable age of automation.
The Robots Are Coming! centers around the issue of jobs and their future in the context of rapid automation and the growth of online products and services. As two of Oppenheimer's interviewees - both experts in technology and economics from Oxford University - indicate, 47 percent of existing jobs are at risk of becoming automated or rendered obsolete by other technological changes in the next 20 years. Oppenheimer examines current changes in several fields, including the food business, legal work, banking, and medicine, speaking with experts in the field and citing articles and literature on automation in various areas of the workforce. He contrasts the perspectives of "techno-optimists" with those of "techno-negativists" and generally attempts to find a middle ground between an alarmist vision of the future and one that is too uncritical. A self-described "cautious optimist", Oppenheimer believes that technology will not create massive unemployment but rather will drastically change what work looks like.
Reseñas de la Crítica
"A must read for those who fear their jobs may be threatened by robots or A.I., The Robots Are Coming! presents a realistic picture of the fantastic opportunities for those who start preparing themselves now!" (Peter H. Diamandis, executive founder of Singularity University, founder and executive chairman of the XPRIZE Foundation and author of Abundance and Bold)
"If you want to understand the future of jobs, read The Robots Are Coming! The detailed and brilliant reportage of Andres Oppenheimer provides an eye-opening account of the brave new world of work that awaits us. It’s not just truck drivers and retail clerks who are at risk, professionals like lawyers, doctors and high-tech engineers, all of them really, need to get ready for what’s coming." (Richard Florida, author of The Rise of the Creative Class)
"This is by far the best book on the topic. Rather than sensationalizing or downplaying the coming technological changes, Andres has articulated them in a way that almost anyone can understand. And he provides a very sensible guide to the jobs of the future." (Vivek Wadhwa, distinguished fellow and adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon's School of Engineering at Silicon Valley)

The widening gap between rich and poor means dealing with one big, uncomfortable truth: If you're not at the top, you're at the bottom. The global labor market is changing radically thanks to growth at the high end and the low. About three quarters of the jobs created in the United States since the great recession pay only a bit more than minimum wage. Still, the United States has more millionaires and billionaires than any country ever, and we continue to mint them.

Despite the world's elation at the Arab Spring, shockingly little has changed politically in the Middle East; even frontliners Egypt and Tunisia continue to suffer repression, fixed elections, and bombings, while Syria descends into civil war. But in the midst of it all, a quieter revolution has begun to emerge, one that might ultimately do more to change the face of the region: Entrepreneurship.

Historia
When most of us think about artificial intelligence, our minds go straight to cyborgs, robots, and sci-fi thrillers where machines take over the world. But the truth is that artificial intelligence is already among us. It exists in our smartphones, fitness trackers, and refrigerators that tell us when the milk will expire. In some ways the future people dreamed of at the World's Fair in the 1960s is already here. We're teaching our machines how to think like humans, and they're learning at an incredible rate.

A Crystal Ball into Our Future
I liked the layout of the chapters and how smooth the content moved me along capturing my curiosity from chapter to chapter. Not much I didn’t like. I recommend this to all who are currently employed, to all who are looking to develop themselves and remain marketable, all who need to pay bills, all who have children in their lives, especially all parents, all who are legislators, all educators, the President of the USA

informative
I liked the informative and investigate side of this book. but I wasn't a fan of the polical and somewhat bias opinions. Trump was mentioned a so much it took away from all the great information it was provided.

The Jetsons Age is Coming
Forget the zombie apocalypse: the real upheaval, according to Andres Oppenheimer, will be the transition from manual labor of all kinds to the mechanical, computerized workforce. In ages past, such societal transformations have always gone on. The difference today, and in the next few decades, is the swiftness of the change. Schools must adapt from rote learning to "soft skills" (I despise that term) training, and every productive person must become a lifelong learner with an entrepreneurial mindset. In other words, the worklife is fixin' to become a constant hustle.
The author contends that there will be a short-term disaster as many workers, regardless of diploma or degree, will be made redundant, resulting in large numbers of unemployable people and therefore a socially volatile situation. However, this will be followed by an age of freedom from the grind and the greater ability to pursue one's dreams, foundationally sustained by universal basic income. I don't entirely disagree, but I wonder how many will remain in the community of consumers, and who will be relegated to serfdom.

Great idea but amazingly repetitive
This book probably could have been ended after the first third. It starts off so well and it gives great examples and then later breaks into different markets giving the same examples.

Generallly General
I feel like the level of depth that the author went to was very general. Very few solid examples who's data supported the position. Some stats such as immigration in 2000 and is lower in 2017 seem cherry picked to support narrative without taking into consideration the next year war broke out and could be a major contribution to a reduction in immigration
