In 1999, Emmon Bodfish was murdered in his home in the wealthy enclave of Orinda, California, just east of San Francisco. For the young crime-scene analyst Paul Holes, it quickly became the most bizarre and surprising case of his storied career.

It was immediately clear how Emmon had died: by being hit over the head with a heavy object. What wasn’t clear was who did it and why. Each clue was like a doorway to an expanding labyrinth of leads—leads involving pagan ceremonies, stolen artwork, a mysterious disease, an elusive shoe pattern, entomology, a blue demon, a family inheritance, an enigmatic child, a struggle for identity, and passages written in a secret language throughout two decades of Emmon’s diaries.

No matter how deep Paul went into the tunnels of the mystery, the shape-shifting shadow of Emmon’s antagonist stayed just out of reach. Paul had never faced anything like it. He became obsessed with solving it. For himself and for Emmon.

I appreciate the dedication of all involved. Such a tragedy how persons can be completely destroyed by childhood torture. Also tragic is the way Eammon passed on the same kind of soul destroying treatment to his own son.

Fascinating and frustrating!

Once I started, I couldn't stop listening. The uniqueness of the story made me want to listen to the conclusion.

The narration is beautiful. The episode writing is also amazing. There are so many details that bring the images to life when you listen. I like how they did a slow reveal of the various aspects of the story. I think if you enjoyed similar podcasts like S Town (been a long time but it feels similar). you'll enjoy this series. Another very troubled human being and complicated situation.

On another note, I have so many follow up questions! And the web has nothing to offer. Maybe one or two pics of Emmon. Can't find much on Max. Really, what's out there are Paul's tweets and the original news stories. Hoping the success of this podcast will encourage additional resources on the web.

Captivating story that is well structured.

This popped up as a recommendation for me to check out. I am so glad I did. I had never heard of this case to begin with. Very well written, spoken, etc. this was such a heartbreaking story. But I am so glad to have been able to listen to it told from the people involved personally with the case.

Very well done

I loved this Podcast, it’s such an unusual true crime case and I love that there are three narrators, you really learn the in and outs of their efforts to solve the case. All Podcasts should use this as a reference for their own education. Wonderful!

This series is one of the most well produced, powerful and emotionally engaging stories I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. As a recovering addict with suicidal Idealization, I have been born into a new life that appreciates humanity and nature at a level I never could before. I can only say that everyone who has a soul should hear this.

One of the best I’ve ever heard

The Riddle of Emmon Bodfish An Enigmatic Man. A Mysterious Murder. By: Paul Holes, Peter McDonnell, Josh Sanburn Narrated by: Paul Holes, Jim Clemente is one of the better true crime podcasts I have listened to. The narration by individuals involved in the case is excellent. This listener felt as if he were riding along with the investigators. This true story has everything. Interesting individuals, clues, ciphers, etc. But, unlike most true crime presentations the authors and narrators made you feel for the victim. At times you could hear the sadness in their voices. You got to know all the people involved. This is the gold standard of true crime podcasts.

One of the better podcasts in the true crime genre

This is truly an A+ podcast. I was riveted! No spoilers, but there are many fascinating details that kept me rapt throughout including the victim's nonconventional religious practices and their potential ramifications on his physical and mental health, and his repeatedly expressed desire to die a violent death exactly like the one that eventually befell him. The pacing and structure of the podcast were fantastic! I did not want this story to end!

Don't skip this if you love true crime!
