The earliest traditions around the narrative of Jesus' resurrection are considered in this landmark work by Dale C. Allison, Jr, drawing together the fruits of his decades of research into this issue at the very core of Christian identity.

Allison returns to the ancient sources and earliest traditions, charting them alongside the development of faith in the resurrection in the early church and throughout Christian history. Beginning with historical-critical methodology that examines the empty tomb narratives and early confessions, Allison moves on to consider the resurrection in parallel with other traditions and stories, including Tibetan accounts of saintly figures being assumed into the light, in the chapter "Rainbow Body".

Finally, Allison considers what might be said by way of results or conclusions on the topic of resurrection, offering perspectives from both apologetic and skeptical viewpoints. In his final section of "modest results", he considers scholarly approaches to the resurrection in light of human experience, adding fresh nuance to a debate that has often been characterized in overly simplistic terms of "it happened" or "it didn't".

Sincerity. Seriousness

Advertised as the seminal book on the Resurrection, this gives all arguments and personal experiences their due. Easy to listen to. A lot of biblical references which you may look up as you read. I didn’t though.

Very thorough and intellectually honest

The author does a great deep dive into ghosts, near death experiences, apparitions of the Virgin Mary and other saints, religious relics, and other supernatural phenomena to carefully examine the evidence of the resurrection of Jesus from many different angles. Allison is himself a believer and offers his own personal experiences with the supernatural, which is remarkable given that he is a professor and an accomplished scholar. It’s a bit lengthy, but worth the listen. Highly recommended.

The Scholarship is Astounding

This book is the most impressive and expansive treatment of Christian apologetics, polemics, and history. Not for the faint of heart, this book will challenge your beliefs through the sheer force of the author's intelligence, deep knowledge of the subject matter, and honest application of theological analysis to enshrined Christian doctrines. A masterpiece from start to finish.

Balanced approach

This was a balanced approach that was greatly appreciated by me. We have no historical proof for or against. Much academic work lays a groundwork. I had to speed up playback as naration was too slow
