The protagonist chooses to spend the night in an allegedly haunted room in a castle, with the intention of disproving the claims. Initially at ease, the narrator experiences an increasing sense of unease. He stumbles over a piece of furniture, hits his head and loses consciousness. In the morning, he decides that the room is haunted by fear itself.
