The Coast Guard is shocked when they rescue a child from the waters off Florida. Her long, wild hair and the barnacles attached to her skin initially lead them to think that they have discovered a mermaid. However, they are even more amazed to discover that this is a young girl that has been raised by dolphins after losing her family at sea. They name her Mila.

Eager to learn more about this child, as well as the marine environment she was raised in, scientists take her to Boston University to be studied. Here Mila learns about her human body and mind, including the joys of using her hands, the ability to communicate with words, and most of all, the gift of playing music. But soon Mila learns that there is a darker side to humans, a manipulative nature that often frustrates her. She is torn between her new life with these confusing creatures and her longing to return to her uncomplicated dolphin family.

Such a fascinating book. Loved the experience of increasingly descriptive language as the girl learns words. This is my daughter's favorite book. She's 10 and she's read it at least 5 times. I thought I'd listen to it so we could talk about it together. I didn't love the reader's tone of voice but it was just a preference thing. She did a great performance. I just really loved this read.

I enjoyed the book and the performance. It’s a story that really provokes thinking. The author really showed creativity with building the story of Mila and the dolphins.

Read exactly as a playwright, actually saying the charactor who's line it is and what he's suposed to say then who says what next then who follows that person, ad who's next n his line n who goes after that. Constantly having to hear "he says, she says, I said, he says, I say, he goes here, she does that, I said, she walks there, she says", "he said"...all the way through the whole book, every single sentence starts off telling who's line it is, what's said or done. Do NOT chose this title, it will annoy you to much to pay attention to the story line.

Constant "he said" I say "he says"
