Riptide, Oregon, 1983. A sleepy coastal town, where crime usually consists of underage drinking down at a Wolf Point bonfire. But then, strange things start happening. A human skeleton is unearthed in a local park, and mutilated animals begin appearing, seemingly sacrificed, on the town's beaches.

The Mercy of the Tide follows four people drawn irrevocably together by a recent tragedy as they do their best to reclaim their lives - leading them all to a discovery that will change them and their town forever.

At the heart of the story are Sam Finster, a senior in high school mourning the death of his mother, and his sister Trina, a nine-year-old deaf girl who denies her grief by dreaming of a nuclear apocalypse as Cold War tensions rise. Meanwhile, sheriff Dave Dobbs and deputy Nick Hayslip must try to put their own sorrows aside to figure out who, or what, is wreaking havoc on their once-idyllic town.

Keith Rosson paints outside the typical genre lines with his brilliant debut novel. It is a gorgeously written book that merges the sly wonder of magical realism and alternate history with the depth and characterization of literary fiction.

DONT MISS THIS!

PRETTY CLOSE TO GREAT! if you enjoy suspense, mystery , light horror then get this and pay attention. It has elements of Stephen King but the author stands out on his own and one can sense he writes from the heart, The prose can be a little over zealous at times but the right narrator was chosen. The story is original but if you read The outsider by King then you will appreciate this one.
Both a rich and velvety Narrator and Premiere Novel that needs to stop flying under the radar. It deserves more credit then it has.

Slow, depressing, and in huge need of a good editor

It’s a shame. The characterization is good. The prose excellent. But the text is so internet in rolling in depression and over description that it becomes an unbroken exercise in self indulgence. An editor should have taken a ruthless red pencil to the first 16 chapters.

Can't quite remember how this one came under my radar but I really enjoyed the story! The buildup of suspense along with the fears of the Cold War ... all in small town America were developed so well! It's my first time with this author and am downloading his latest next!

Character introspection

All the wonderful reviews have covered what is so wonderful about this writing. I can only add that the narrator had the perfect cadence for this. It felt conversational, not monotone or weird.
