Thoroughly enjoyed this! Narrator kept me hanging on every word. Story has wonderful intrigue and twists.

It was THAT Good!

I listen to books daily. I am always having to buy extra credits just to get by. That said, this is the best credit I have used for a very long time. Tana French can speak to you as though she’s the best friend you never got to meet! At one point I remember thinking that I would like to know someone as intelligent as Ms French. She must be an incredible conversationalist. So how good is it? I’m pretty jaded because of the amount of books I listen to. It’s hard to get five stars across the board from me. Especially when there is a major flaw. And I admit it, this book has a major flaw. But it’s easily overlooked, because you could stop reading an hour before the book is over. I gave it five stars because it was so very good and intensely engrossing… Except for the last hour. It has to be a damn good book for me to give it five stars when I didn’t like the last hour. But this book walks away with any reader’s award I could throw at it. And the last hour? Well, it didn’t add anything to the work anyway. There was a perfectly good ending just before that hour. Enjoy!

The absolute Best

The story, the telling, absolutely wonderful. I could not tear myself away. Tana French is amazing. However, Heather O’Neill as a storyteller is spellbinding so, between the two, this mystery held me every minute. I am also surprised to find that someone found a way to create a murder mystery without a villain. This is just great writing, a great mystery, wonderful characters and a great talented storyteller. I’m hooked on Tana French and Heather O’Neill.

Fantastic Mystery

I thought the first DMS book was great, but this one topped it for me. Part of this may be that Cassie Maddox is a more interesting and likable character than Rob Ryan, but it also surely has to do with French’s style. She’s just a better writer than most others putting out procedurals. I was hooked from early on. Rarely do I find excuses to sit in my house listening to an audiobook, but I had a hard time putting this one down. You’ll likely see some of the twists coming, but that’s not the main thing that has me eagerly awaiting my next credit. It’s the quality of dialogue, the humor that works, the well developed characters and the journey of solving the case. I hope they just keep getting better. Heather O’Neil was also a great narrator.

Extraordinarily Detailed Murder Mystery

Very detailed as only a criminal investigator could be. I wanted to scream "move along!" At the same time, I couldn't wait to pick up the book again. The author left nothing unanswered. All questions got answered which was greatly appreciated in the end.

Love Tana’s Character Development

As always I absolutely love how well you get to know the characters in Tana’s books. I enjoyed the story and there were plenty of times I couldn’t stop listening to it!

As I have said in previous reviews, I know that I will end up not liking the main character, or at least not as much as I originally thought. In her first book I started off enjoying Rob, then disliking him, then understanding him. In this book, I started off having nice and sweet feelings for Cassie, but I really ended up disliking her, more than I ever disliked Rob. I think it is because Rob went through something horrendous and never properly dealt with it. Unfortunately, he ruined his friendship because of it, and he knew it.

Cassie, on the other hand, just came off as a chick with commitment issues. She had no good reason to really be that way, I didn’t like how she treated Sam, and I really wanted to smack her for it. I would love it if Tana did a book about Sam! But, maybe not, he’s one I want to continue to like.

Ridiculous premise, but so well-written it almost doesn't matter. Brilliant narration! Slightly repetitive at times. occasionally too wordy. But the depth and power of characterization makes it work.

Love lost and found between lifelong friends .

Great but convoluted story of love and survival in Ireland. Brutality and tenderness was reflected in this police procedural.

Stellar narration; overlong

I’ve been a Tana French fan since her very first novel. I found this book compelling, but her editors must have been on vacation. Overlong and self-indulgent, with a premise that truly challenges credulity: it’s best not to overthink it.

The narration, though—Heather O’Neill absolutely slays. This book **almost** doesn’t deserve her.
