The Life We Bury, Allen Eskens' debut novel, received the 2015 Rosebud Award for Best First Mystery Novel. Additionally, the book was a finalist in five other competitions, including the Edgar® Award for Best First Novel. Eskens, a criminal defense lawyer, lives near Mankato, Minnesota, near the setting of his novel. In fact, he is also a graduate of the University of Minnesota, which the two major characters in the book attend. The Life We Bury tells the story of a young man seeking to escape the trap of his less than ideal upbringing while redeeming a dying man convicted of rape and murder 30 years before. It highlights the struggle of a young man creating his own home, an old man seeking peace at the end of his life, as well as the ghosts of experiences that haunt them.
