Bob Irwin grew up in the Dandenong Ranges, where his passion for wildlife was born. A near-death experience while working as a plumber made Bob realise he needed to follow his dreams, so he and his wife, Lyn, moved their young family to Queensland, where they opened a wildlife park on the Sunshine Coast. The Irwin children grew up in and around the Beerwah Reptile and Wildlife Park, learned about the animals there from their dad and cared for orphaned wildlife at home with their mum. Passion for the environment and all animals became a way of life for them.

This unique upbringing had a profound impact on Bob's son Steve, who followed in his father's footsteps and became famous around the world as the Crocodile Hunter, an educator and wildlife warrior. Bob nearly didn't survive the sudden death of his adored wife, Lyn, and it was Steve who helped him face life again. When the world tragically lost Steve to a freak diving accident, it wasn't just the animals that lost the best friend they ever had. Bob did, too.

Describing it as moving forward without a map, Bob spent many years burying himself in physical work as a means to cope with the loss of his son. It was the natural world and the animals within it that helped Bob to keep going, and since then he has continued to fight for his beloved Steve's legacy of protecting the wildlife, environment and planet on which our own survival depends.

Wobderful

I absolutely loved this book! It takes you on the journey of Bob Irwin’s life and includes his own personal stories about Steve Irwin. I was a blubbering mess at times with tears streaming down my face. He shares the raw pain of his losses and grief in a way that I felt the gut wrenching pain right along with him.

For those wanting a book about Steve Irwin’s life story, this is not it. This is his dad’s story. Yes, there is a great deal devoted to Steve, but it is through Bob’s eyes. This is Bob’s story, and it is beautiful on its own. It will give you a deeper understanding of why Steve was the way he was. It will also give you a greater respect for both men and the wildlife they fight so hard to save. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in wildlife conservation. I’d give it 8 stars if I could. It’s rare that a book has such a profound effect on me. The Last Crocodile Hunter did.

Absolutely great book! Well written with many perspectives! Hearing it from Bob Irwin and his passion for animals and his family.

Interesting insight by the man who started it all.

Great book. Bob Irwin basically built the zoo with his bare hands. He was a conservationist before that was even a thing. He is an inspiration.

If you are looking for a book just about Steve Irwin, you would be somewhat disappointed. The book does give you an inside look of his life and character, but this book is about Bob. His life, his loss, his journey. It does talk about the loss of Steve, and the loss of his wife Lyn.

It reminds us that even through our losses and hard places, we can still do good. We can still care and help the world.

Thanks to Bob for this fascinating story.

This is how the Australian Zoo began and the touching story of father Bob's life, love of animals, his devotion to son Steve. Stories I never knew existed, and only hope that the chasm between Bob and Steve's family can be bridged.
Narration is great but hard to tell who is the narrator between chapters unless you catch the quick intro.

Emotional

I grew up watching Steve Irwin on TV starting when I was around 8 years old in the 90s. I already loved animals and he taught me even more, adding to my knowledge acquired from the school library and wandering around in the woods around our Arkansas home. I read Terri Irwins book about Steve years ago... I was surprised to find this one by Bob was better. More emotional and heart felt. I've cried more with this book than any other. I loved Steve, wanted to move to Australia and work at his zoo when I grew up. My dreams were shattered the day he died. Thank you Bob for this glimpse into my heros life. I am so sorry for your losses. I can't even begin to comprehend the pain... I wish you and your family the best. ~Natalie

The detail in the book makes you feel like you are along with them throughout their adventures

Sometimes it was hard to tell who was telling the stories in each chapter which made it hard to follow at times

Wonderful to rediscover the Crocodile Hunter and learn how a man like him is made. I’ve sent it to my family.

Crocs Rule

A beautiful tribute to a son from a father. What incredible lives you have led. I don’t think I fully understood the concept of a keystone species until I started watching the show as when it first aired. Steve’s enthusiasm was definitely catching. I hope all the grandchildren come to appreciate where it all started.
