In the famous photograph of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. on the balcony of Memphis’s Lorraine Motel, one man kneeled down beside King, trying to staunch the blood from his fatal head wound with a borrowed towel.

This kneeling man was a member of the Invaders, an activist group that was in talks with King in the days leading up to the murder. But he also had another identity: an undercover Memphis police officer reporting on the activities of this group, which was thought to be possibly dangerous and potentially violent. This kneeling man is Leta McCollough Seletzky’s father.

Marrell McCollough was a Black man working secretly with the white power structure, a spy. This was so far from her understanding of what it meant to be Black in America, of everything she eventually devoted her life and career to, that she set out to learn what she could about his life, his actions and motivations. But with that decision came risk. What would she uncover about her father, who went on to a career at the CIA, and did she want to bear the weight of knowing?

Beautifully Read by daughter

A thoroughly researched account of the career and life challenges of a black Memphis police officer assigned to monitor a “radical” grassroots Memphis group, The Invaders. Book also tracks Mac McCulloughs later career struggles with racism in the Memphis Police Department & later, the CIA.

Man that Stood

I really enjoyed this audible book read by the author. I love how she invites us onto her father’s journey from a Mississippi sharecropper’s son to a undercover policeman in Memphis to an agent in the CIA. I like how she weaves in her own personal story and perspectives too. Before listening, I didn’t know much of the story behind the man famously captured kneeling next to the body of MLK tending to his fatal gunshot wound. As a listener I learned about this man, the author’s father, and also what life was like for him in the segregated south. I liked too how the author reminds us of even though we’ve come a long way, we still have a lot more to go to see the fulfillment of King’s dream of a beloved community.

This was a very insightful and informative story!! In the author's own words, we learn about the gentleman who was kneeling beside a mortally wounded Martin Luther King, Jr.. A wealth of information and provides insight to someone who was there and his story in the years that followed the assassination.
