Short, sweet, stories w/ a splash of spice…

To understand why this is a worthwhile series has to begin with what this series is NOT - because this is its strength.

It seems the ability to self publish digital media content has given rise to a generation of young authors who have - absent a legitimate vetting and editing gatekeeper - flooded the market with extreme literary porn disguised as everyday adult romance. Even worse, they take a story idea and only create enough actual story to fill a single book (if that) then inject massive quantities of raunchy, gratuitous sex to amass enough content to stretch it out into a series. In other words, they don’t care as much about the quality of their work or the integrity of their characters as they do making money. If we’re honest, avid readers and audiobook listeners will admit that by the second book of most series. the characters are typically reduced to raging nymphomaniacs who can’t go a chapter without having sex in ways and places that are increasingly incongruous with the actual story, cannot be reconciled with who the author has written the characters to be in the story itself, and destroy the ability to maintain the suspension of disbelief.

That is why Carly Phillips deserves credit for her work. She writes a little spice, yes. But it is wholly in line with what is reasonable and believable. The stories and the characters never take a back seat to smut. She pulls no punches and there is no bait and switch in the second or third story. In other words, she understands and respects her audience. She doesn’t view us all as closet sex addicts who secretly want porn instead of legitimately good stories.

Both box sets (Books 1-4 and Books 5-9) are worthy of a credit and a refreshing break from the garbage. And the narration is fantastic. This is why I am giving the Kingston series one of the limited number of 5 star ratings I’ve given in over 2,200 audiobooks. It is well deserved.
