Good story but distracting narration

I did not finish this book. While I like the Inspector Morse series I found the narrator's affectation too distracting

First time author for me. I admit, I listened to this book as I have watched some of the Inspector Morse series on TV, all of the Endeavour TV series and was intrigued enough to give one of the author's books in the series a listen.

I wouldn't say it was a great crime thriller although it was enjoyable. A group of American tourists is visiting England, one of the stops being Oxford, and one of the group members turns up dead. It appears it was an innocent heart attack but Morse suspects something is awry and sets out to determine what foul play has been afoot.

The crime and investigation weren't that tantalizing. What was enjoyable was the setting and timeframe with a good explanation of British traits and settings during the 1990s.

Of special interest was the mention of all the horny 19–22-year-old US military in England before D-Day and how the British gals were up to the task of welcoming them. Three on the tour had been part of that era and it played a partial part of the story. I have a friend that found out in his 60s that he had a half-brother from this era that his dad had deposited there, and the brother only contacted his siblings and he after he knew both his bio dad and his wife had passed.

Also, I find the character of Morse and the character of Detective John Rebus in the Ian Rankin book and TV series quite similar. The main difference is Morse is in Oxford, Rebus in Edinburgh.

Frederick Davidson is all you need

I’m not so sure I like the story, or Inspector Morse. Colin Dexter is a good storyteller, but it comes with the baggage of misogyny and homophobia typical of the 80’s. However, Frederick Davidson is transcendent. He makes everything delightful and interesting. One of my top 3 narrators ever, I’ll try anything he narrates.

Enjoyable

The narration was excellent. I listened at 1.2x so not sure if that made a difference from some of the negative narration reviews, but I thought the narrator did an excellent job with the different characters and with Morse.

Some reviews were scathing. Americans listening to a different accent or delivery???

The narrator is adept at various UK accents and personalities of that then culture. The American accent was generic, but that’s ok. It was clearly meant to not sound like a Brit.

I heard Inspector Morse and Lewis , as I knew them, speaking. Kept my attention. And I found I I was laughing at Morse’s acerbic wit.

The quotes at the beginning of the chapters were reflective of Morse’s way of looking at the world. And why would anyone complain about what cannot be changed or explained by the author??

BTW, this reviewer is an American , born and raised in the Northeast USA. So, the first sentence or two were observations of the negative comments, The condescension was not lost on me.

Humour Enhances Crime-solving Process

As a longtime devotee of the Inspector Morse TV series, this is only the second book I've read in the book series, and the first audiobook I've listened to in the series. John Thaw is, of course, iconic in his portrayal of the curmudgeonly Morse on television. What struck me in listening to this audiobook was the droll subtlety of the author's observations about people. Some folks don't "get" or enjoy British humour, but I found these tidbits quite hilarious in the midst of the seriousness of murder and Morse's cerebral approach to concluding his case. Colin Dexter is a master of this device!

Excellent English crime story

This is an excellent English crime novel featuring the famous Inspector Morse and his sidekick Lewis. You don’t need to be familiar with the series in order to enjoy this book. It’s a great mystery, well written and captures the spirit, wit, quirkiness of Inspector Morse. Highly recommend it.

First time listener of Morse

I have seen all the Morse mysteries on TV and thoroughly enjoyed getting to know CI Morse much better through the book. Frederick Davidson is a superb reader. On occasion, I could hear the sound of a page and for me, it added to the experience. Strongly recommend.
