Couldn't even make it through the first few chapters

This book was so slow, confusing, boring and poorly written that I couldn't even make it through an hour of listening without serious doubt that I even was reading the right place in a book series. It's supposed to be the first book, but it introduces characters and refers to back stories and relationships that the writer must assume the readers can simply infer from thin air.

Then, while trying to untangle the muddle of names and characters that had hardly been fleshed out enough for me to remember who was who, the dialogue between the characters suddenly and sharply nose dived into casual use of extremely strong profanity, completely unnecessarily. Again, I had to take a step back and ask myself why I should invest any time or attention to a series where the author couldn't be bothered to compose a sentence that used the F-word. There is such a rich variety of vocabulary in the English language. Must one always rely solely on profanity?

For me, the answer was NO. No to the unreasonable profanity, no to bizarrely connected characters I couldn't keep straight, no to confusing plot tangles that never unwound, and no to a series that inevitably would have subjected me to far more frustration than enjoyment.
