As the inhabitants of Gost go about their days, working, striving to better themselves and their town, and arguing, the town's volatile truths whisper ever louder. A masterpiece of storytelling haunted by lost love and a restrained menace, this novel recalls Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee and Ani's Ghost by Michael Ondaatje. good read/listen

There is detail of a different life and culture. Relationships are developed, tension maintained throughout

Surprising but it takes time to get there.

This book was easy to listen to but a lot of unnecessary description. Character is a surprising contradiction.

disapointing

all over the place. the story told simultaneously was told in confusing fragments that I was never able to put together.

Great social fiction

I'm not Croatian, but I have Croatian relatives, and I was even in Croatia during the spring offensive of 1993. So I'm not totally out of my depth when I say that I imagine this as a very plausible account of how life would be in Croatia now given the Yugoslav civil war. The insertion of an English family helps make it accessible to non-Slavic audiences. And the understated sexual tension was incredibly skillful.
